Wearing My Wedding Dress

Wednesday, March 08, 2017

Andy came home a while ago and told me about an interview he'd heard on the radio with a lady talking about how, and why, she wears her wedding dress regularly.

He knew I'd enjoy hearing about it as I can often be found wandering about the house wearing mine. Instances have become less frequent but I still enjoy wearing it once in a while. Andy has received several selfies of me in my dress, usually accessorised with slippers or an old cardy.

Before we were married I read an article about a lady who wears her dress every year on their anniversary, no matter where they are or what they're doing. She'd worn it to breakfast in a small B&B it one year. I love this idea.

I wore mine on our first anniversary. I put it on and walked out into the yard as Andy came home from work, we were going out to dinner that night and I was forbidden from wearing it, I think I probably would've given half the chance.

One day I was in a bit of an odd mood, y'know one of those I'm not sure why I feel like this kinda moods. I snapped at Andy (I forget the reason, if there even was one), so I went upstairs and slipped into my dress. I reappeared in the kitchen doorway and asked if he'd like a cuppa. I then spent a very pleasant few minutes sitting with him on the sofa sipping tea, mood lifted.

At some point I'm going to have it dry cleaned and then vacuum pack it, but that means I won't be able to unzip the cover and gaze at it. And then give in to temptation and put it on, again.
My friend told me that her Mum's dress has been vacuum packed for over thirty years and it's as white as the day it was purchased. No yellowing at all. I can't bear the thought that happening to mine.

After we got married Andy and I both said we'd like to renew our vows, I think all newly weds say this in the glowey aftermath of their nuptials, I very much doubt we ever will but if we do I hope I can still fit into it.

What have you done with your wedding dress? Do you still have it? Do you ever wear it?

  1. Aww, I think this is lovely - in fact, I might get mine out for an airing. I have worn it ince since the day itself for some wedding 'modelling' I did for a friend who was doing hair and beauty at college and needed a willing (and married) model for her wedding module. I loved it.

    1. That sound like fun. We did have to opportunity to both get dressed up in our wedding gear to stage a fake wedding for a new gazebo at our evening venue but Andy wasn't keen.
Enjoy it if you do get it out again!

  2. I love the thought of you lounging around the house in a wedding dress and slippers!
We've been together for almost 25 years but not married but I do have a wedding dress, a 1960s gold crocheted maxi with huge sleeves I bought from a car boot sale - I wear it to festivals, working at vintage fairs and even down the pub. xxx

    1. I love it, I just have to be careful the cats don't pounce on the train!
I like the sound of your dress (I love that you have one, even when not married), it must've featured on the blog before, right?

  3. This makes me think of the Friends episode! Oops, never got mine washed and it is still sitting in a box! I wonder if I can fit into it as I'm a bit larger than I was and it fitted perfectly then. I would be tempted to wear it for a Jane Austen ball though as it would be great for that!Xx

  4. What a lovely idea to wear your wedding dress around the house. It would be a shame to keep such a gorgeous dress under wraps. I love your selfie with the slippers! It's hard to believe now, but when I got married, 22 years ago, I wasn't into dresses at all, and I wore trousers. I'm not joking. I really regret not having a wedding dress I can keep and treasure forever. xxx

    1. My sister in law had a 3/4 length ivory shift dress and a bolero jacket, which was beautiful - she looked lovely - but it wasn't a traditional wedding dress and she's always regretted not having one, so when I went shopping for mine I kept that in mind.

  6. Oh, I love this! I always said I would wear my dress around the house, but I haven't done it. It's currently in a box under my bed. Perhaps I'll break it out for our anniversary this year. I occasionally wear my wedding shoes, though; they're red sandal heels.

    1. I love the sound of your shoes! I almost had bright blue peep toe sandals but went for silver instead - the ones in the photo montage above. I love putting my dress on, it just brings back so many memories, not just of the wedding day but of shopping for it, having fittings, and trying it on every time I went to my Mum's house :)
