Books | 2016

Saturday, January 07, 2017

If you'd asked me how many books I'd read in 2016 I'd have guessed at 30 or more. In reality I only read 17 with the final pages of my last book being finished on December 31st. I'm pretty sure that I either purchased or was given more than 17 books over the course of the year!

On my last birthday I vowed to read everything unread on my bookshelves before my next birthday. I've read two books since then, so I'm going to have to ramp-up my reading if I'm going to have even the slightest chance of success!

I've got eight months to read 29 books (if you don't count the 13 books I've amassed since my birthday!) so I need to read 4 per month, that's one a week. Which is highly unlikely. I read infrequently, and slowly so I've got quite a challenge ahead of me!

I'm kicking off with Lord of the Flies by William Golding.

What's on your to-read list?

  1. Good luck! I do know what you mean about reading infrequently. This year I read loads, but it can be really hard for me to juggle leisure time priorities. Do I knit, read, sew, or just relax? Hope you find the time or that the mood to read strikes more often.

    1. So far, so good. I just have to sneak in a few moments reading when I can.

  2. I could read much more than I do if I did it instead of something else, but it's all about balance. I enjoy other things so I do them during the day and my reading time is when I go to bed, sometimes I read a chapter, sometimes more, but I managed to get through forty eight books this year and apart from those I read on holiday, the rest were read in bed. Sometimes I can't sleep so my Kindle is a godsend as I can read without putting the light on and disturbing Mick. I seem to have bought lots of books just lately, some proper books and lots on my Kindle too.

    1. I waste too much time on Pinterest, I love idly scrolling through the images but when I'm done it does feel like a waste. I'd like to be able to read in the lounge when the TV is on, that way I'd could read whilst Andy watched TV, but I find it too distracting.
I haven't tried a Kindle yet, I love books too much, but I can see how handy it is for night time reading, and traveling. Maybe one day I'll give it a go...

  3. I'm solar powered, if the sun's out, I'll read loads. I get through around 25 books when we're in India!
At home I always read in bed (unless I've been out drinking, then I sleep) and probably average a book a week.
I started recording what I'd read on Goodreads but that fell by the wayside. xxx

    1. Solar powered - I like it!
I started good reads too, didn't last long. I always have a book on the go, but sometimes I can go weeks without picking it up

  4. I've never counted the number of books I read, so I have no idea, really. I always read in bed, but when I've had a tough day at work, I tend to fall asleep after half a page, or less. I currently have two books on the go, one to read in bed, which I've just started (The Woman in the Picture by James Wilson) and a book I brought back from my dad, to read downstairs. It's a really old-fashioned Dutch translation of a book called Yeoman's Hospital by Helen Ashton. xxx

    1. I only really started to keep track when I began posting books I'd read on Instagram, I was so surprised I'd only managed 17 last year

  5. What a great range of titles you read in 2016 though. And judging by your Instagram you are racing through them in 2017! You've read more than me this year so far!

  6. I'm glad to see lots of Alexander McCall Smith in there. Other books there are intriguing me. The main thing is that you ENJOYED what you read even of the quantity was not what you hoped. I took 4 books to South Africa (including one that is 1034 pages long) and only read 3of them! We kept v busy all the time and on the plane returning, I only put one book in my bag (which was annoying as I finished it with 4hours to spare.
Please don't apologise for nor reading my blog, I should apologize for failing to catch up. It is bizarre that virtually NO ONE I read is showing up in my Blogger reading feed. I wanted to find your GFC last night and unfollow then follow again to see if that helped but I couldn't find it!!x

    1. Which ones intrigue you? I did enjoy all of them. I loved Wild, and found Beees and A Year of Living Danishly very interesting. I enjoyed the AMS books a lot, they're engaging and so easy to read.
My GFC has gone? I'll investigate, I've noticed a few glitches recently, some people who comment on my blog regularly don't trigger an email to let me know they've commented, I have to check my comments in Blogger. And I stopped gettting my posts emailed to me automatically for a while - I like to have a copy just in case.
I enjoyed catching up on your posts last night.

  7. Lots of these are on my to read list! I'm aiming for 30 in 2017, but would have to live to be 150 if I wanted to read all the books on my shelves :\

    1. I enjoyed all the books I read last year - not a dud among them!
I actually gave away a lot of books last year because I knew I couldn't possibly read them all, and then I asked for a load more for my birthday / Christmas! I'm back in the reading groove though.
Good luck with your goal :)
