The Summer of Wearing It All

Tuesday, July 09, 2019

I signed up to Slow Fashion Season last month, it's a pledge to avoid purchasing any new items for the summer, to encourage shopping your wardrobe, shopping secondhand, and making do and mending.

I knew it'd be easy for me to do as I buy brand new items so infrequently these days. It's for this reason that I decided to make it more of a challenge for myself and take the 'shop your wardrobe' idea to it's extreme. I've abandoned my usual capsule wardrobe and plan to wear a different outfit everyday if I have enough clothes, which I suspect I do.

It feels a lot like my Wearing It All challenge of 2011, remember that? I wore all of the clothing items I owned and wasn't allowed to wear anything twice. I still have a handful of those clothes in my wardrobe. This challenge is a little different though as I will allow myself to wear items more than once, as long as it's in a different outfit.

It's a good time of year to do this as I have more summer clothes than anything else, so as long as the weather behaves I'll be able to wear a good portion of them. I'm actually rather enjoying it. I'm rediscovering things that I haven't worn in a while, and finding new outfit combinations by teaming new-to-me purchases with old favourites, and long forgotten items.

Here are the first outfits of the challenge.

Do you think you could avoid buying new clothes for three months?

  1. Love this idea! I've bought precisely three items of clothing this year (5 if you count a pair of shoes and a hat) so I could definitely go three months without buying any.

The dress with the blue flowers is very pretty.

    1. Three? That's impressive, I could do with taking a leaf out of your book! Well done.

  2. What a great idea, Hazel. I'm sure you'll surprise yourself with the combinations you'll come up with. I'd do the same, but I have enough stuff for many, many Summers. Should do a bit of decluttering really.xxx

    1. I do like a bit of a wardrobe challenge. Yesterday I wore a jumper that I'd tucked away for autumn with a summer maxi skirt, which is a combination I'd didn't think I'd try, thanks to the weather not doing what the weather should be doing.

  3. I love uncovering hidden gems! Like you, my wardrobe is mostly summery stuff and I couldn't be happier inventing new combinations of old stuff when the sun is shining. xxx

  4. What a great idea. I could definitely go without buying clothes for a three month period, I hate clothes shopping so I regularly go three months without buying any clothes. Saying that, I've just bought myself a couple of new bras.

    1. I can't remember the last time I didn't buy anything over the course of a month. I find charity shops are just too tempting!
Bra shopping is the worst, I avoid it at all costs!

  5. I signed up for this too! I've managed to stick to it so far although I did buy a pair of linen shorts the last day before the challenge started from Lidl (they were a really nice length!) and wished I'd picked up their floral pair! Ah well!
Love your outfits so far.. That long skirt is really pretty- the grey shades one!
I meant to say in my last comment that we saw the Half Boy exhibition at Snape Maltings which is by Chris's old friend's husband- it was really interesting but very curious in places (like a self portrait in the nude which I wasn't really enjoying too much!)

    1. Shorts at a nice length are hard to find. It's the first time I've worn the grey shades skirt (in my mind I called it my hippy skirt), I bought it back in November last year so it's nice to finally get it out.
I'll take a look at the Half Boy exhibition when I'm there.
