Coveting Ego trainers

I don't wear trainers very often so I was surprised at how much I wanted to buy myself these gorgeous embroidered trainers after seeing them on Laura's blog. I immediately saw them teamed with summer dresses and my khaki dungarees. I'm so tempted, but if I do give in to temptation I'll have to wait until Frugal February is over, which might just be long enough to cool my desire...

Cooking

When I read Jennifer's post on cooking with leeks I knew I would be making the Creamy Squash Leek and Pancetta Pots sometime very soon.

Oh-my-goodness they are delicious. The recipe was for four people - enough for two nights for Andy and me. Having finished my first helping I could've easily tucked into a second, not because it wasn't satisfying, but because I was being a glutton. I resisted so that we could enjoy it re-heated the next day. I spent the entire day looking forward to it and we ended up much eating earlier than usual.

Filming

I downloaded the 1 Second Everyday app after seeing it on Oh Gosh. I decided to wait until something exciting happened before starting to film snippets of my day but with little on the horizon I decided to just start. Naturally the first clip is of the cats. On the second day the most exciting thing to happen was me curling my hair for the first time in ages, so that's clip no.2 (did I mention I had nothing exciting coming up?)

Maybe I'll share a full month when it rolls around? Or perhaps a week of clips would be enough. My goal is to film everyday, even the most mundane of snippets, to end up with a year of little memories. I'm so excited by the prospect of this!

Going sugar free

I have an allergy to sugar beet and in an effort to cure it I'm taking a homeopathic remedy for a week. This means I have to cut out sugar altogether. I'd been putting it off, knowing that it would be a pain as soooooo many things have sugar in. I'd decided that I needed to do some research, plan my meals in advance but I was procrastinating and in the end I decided to start and wing it.

So far, it's been OK. The Spag Bol I made last night wasn't as tasty as it could've been as I couldn't use stock or Worcestershire Sauce. My lunchtime cheese on toast has been left wanting after discovering I couldn't use my usual ketchup on it (thinking about it I might've been able to use tomato puree). So many surprising things have sugar added, it's been a real eye opener - I even have to be careful when it comes to bread. Bread!!

If I'd thought about it I would've weighed myself before I started to see what difference it made, but I don't own scales, so...

Living in chaos

We discovered that our central heating pipes where leaking under the floor in the lounge, so we've had the plumbers in digging up the concrete and scaring the living daylights out of the girl cat in order to sort out the issue.

The house has been in chaos for the best part of three days. We decided to replace all of the under floor pipes downstairs so carpets have been pulled up, furniture bundle out of the way, they've needed to take up floorboards upstairs in most rooms. Only our bedroom has remained intact although it has been filled with bits of furniture and odds and ends from other rooms.

I've been hiding in my bedroom reading, and scrolling through Instagram and Pinterest.

I'm glad to say it's now sorted, order has been restored. Now I just need to get rid of the thin film of dust that now covers everything we own. It's so true that you don't appreciate what you've got til it's gone. Boy! I missed my usual peace and quiet.

What have you been up to this week?

  1. I can see the attraction with those trainers, aren't they lovely. I love leeks but Mick's not keen so I rarely cook with them now there's only the two of us at home. I will when Eleanor's home though as she loves them too, Mick will have a choice, eat them or leave them!

    1. Hehe, quite right too! I make my husband eat sweetcorn even though he dislikes it. Leeks are something I cook for him as I can take them or leave them, so it's only fair :)

  2. Oh dear, the pipe problems sound horrific. I remember that layer of dust from when we gutted our kitchen when we first moved in.
Yeast needs a pinch of sugar to activate it. Have you tried making soda bread? It's unleavened so no yeast needed. Whole Earth do a decent sugar free tomato ketchup if you can't live without it. xxx

    1. The dust just gets everywhere!
I'm nearly done with my sugar free week but thanks for the tips. I might start seeking out more sugar free items just because sugar is so bad.

  3. I keep going back to the Ego website and taking those trainers out of my basket then putting them back in again! Maybe once I get a return to work date I can justify it (although someone told me you can find them cheaper on eBay which I am yet to investigate!) xx

    2. I hope we're not the same shoe size otherwise we might end up a bidding war :)

  4. Oh gosh, you have my fullest sympathies for the pipes chaos. We decided to have our bathroom retiled - a small job we thought! - but of course the plaster all came off with the old tiles, so we've had to have it replastered and then the friend who's doing the tiling for us got ill so our bathroom is a dusty nightmare and half-finished, and I haven't been able to have a shower in 3 weeks. Having the house in disarray is the worst, isn't it?

    1. Three weeks? Oh my goodness, I thought three days was bad enough. Poor you, I hope it's sorted soon, it's so disruptive to have things in limbo

  5. I'd never seen the likes of those embroidered trainers! How funny: I don't own any scales either - I thought I was the only one. Goodness me, I would have gone crazy with the house being in chaos for three days. As for that layer of dust: I'm still recovering from the one in our kitchen after we'd had the windows replaced two years ago ... xxx

  6. Oh gosh, what a week! I hope your allergy treatment works. Going sugar-free would be so hard. I'm surprised stock has sugar in it - that's a little disturbing!

I made the pots this week, too. They were so good! Definitely being added to my rotation. Still two rows of leeks to go...

    1. To be fair it might just be the stock I had in my pantry, I'm sure there must be no sugar versions.
I'm thinking of growing leeks now, they're not something we have very often but this dish is well worth it!

  7. Love those trainers! My husband has been sugar free this month too, he was surprised to find so many foods have added sugar in them that you wouldn't expect.

    1. Things that have sugar in them will never surprise me any more. Do you know they used to put sugar in toothpaste? Now they use sweetener!!

  8. I hope the homeopathy works! The trainers are nice!
I LOVE that when you make something amazing and spend all day looking forward to it!! Nooooo, the pipe sounds awful! I hope that it gets sorted asap!

    1. Me too, I'm keeping everything crossed.
I think I've talked myself out of the trainers, but I am still a little tempted.
I have the recipe on the meal plan to make again this week, it's so easy and so, so tasty!
