#30Wears | Red Floral Maxi Skirt

Friday, July 05, 2019

You've seen this skirt many times before. It's appearing on the blog today because it's earned it's #30Wears Badge of Honour.

Given that I purchased this in January 2018 I'm surprised at how long it's taken me to reach #30Wears (40 at the time of writing), especially as I wear it all year round.

One of the reasons for keeping a tally was to find out how long it would take me to wear an item 30 times. It's almost impossible to predict. It doesn't sound like a lot but it can take a while if you don't wear something on a weekly basis.

It only took me two months to wear my new jeans 30 times, but that's not surprising as I live in jeans during the colder months, and skirts are worn less often.

The point of #30Wears is to ask yourself if you'll wear something 30 times before you buy it, and to only buy it if the answer is 'yes', but unless you keep count you'll never know for sure. I was interested to find out, especially as this skirt was new and not secondhand.

It still has a lot of wear left in it and I know I'll continue to step into it periodically. My favourite way to wear it is with any of my 3/4 sleeve jumpers, they make great outfits for the autumn and spring seasons. If it's on the chilly side I can add tights and boots, or stick to bare ankles and brogues if the weather permits.

This skirt was most definitely a good buy!

  1. Hurrah, I love that skirt and I'm glad it's made it to 30 years.

Almost all of my clothes must have been worn at least 30 times. The only exceptions are things other people have given me that I never would have picked up myself (those usually end up in a clothes collection bag unworn!) and nicer dresses that I wear for weddings, etc. I do try to wear them to more than one occasion but I don't get invited to that kind of event often. At roughly one wedding/party a year it will take me 30 years or more to get 30 wears out of them!

    1. Most of the clothes that I've purchased in the last year or so haven't been worn 30 times (I've been keeping count). It's an interesting concept, to wear something 'enough', I'm intrigued by it. It's teaching me that I have rather more clothes than I need (as if I didn't know that already!). But by analysing it I hope to change my shopping habits, to buy fewer new items (which seems to be working), and really get the most out of the items I do have.
I don't think you can be held responsible for the clothing choices of others, it's better to donate them than hang onto the unworn.
All of my friends are married now so I don't know what I'm going to do with my occasion dresses... I should pass them on but they're so pretty.

  2. Thirty is a lot of times to wear something if it's not in regular use. Even once a fortnight is 26 times in a year and I know most of my 'nice' clothes are not worn that often. I doubt if I've worn many of my clothes that much, but then I don't want to get rid of them so they're in it for the long haul!

    1. It really is, I had no idea how long it would take, 30 times doesn't sound a lot, but it is. It's been an interesting experiment, and I don't intend to get rid of the things I like, I simply enjoy finding out.

  3. that's such a pretty skirt, I would wear it every week! When I buy myself something I think the same question, is it going to get worn as many times as pounds to buy! I am hunting out cool things for a holiday in India but EBay is becoming very competitive so I am having to get devious.

    1. Devious? How so, I'm intrigued, tell me more!
That's another good way to decide whether or not to buy - I like that one!
Hope you find lots of lovely stuff for your trip

  4. I think it's amazing that you have worn that skirt 30 times. It's a very pretty skirt. I like the print and the color, but if it was mine, I doubt I would have worn it that many times because I just automatically go for jeans or, now that it is so hot here, lightweight pants. I think it's just a rut I'm in that I choose pants over skirts. Have you calculated the cost per wear of the skirt? That would be interesting to find out. Thanks for sharing Arlene from NJ

    1. Hi Arlene! I often reach for jeans, particularly in the colder months. But I made a promise to myself to wear more of my clothes more often.
If you want to wear more skirts you could pick a day of the week - skirt sunday for example?
That's a good question, it was £18.00 (sale price) and I've worn it 40 times now, so that's 45p per wear - that's not bad is it!? It was £40.00 at full price but I don't think I would've bought it if it hadn't been in the sale. I'm stingy when it comes to buying clothes!

  5. I love this, I am terrible I buy something I totally love and I wear it none stop all the time. Then it wears it out and I get ☹️.
I have loads of clothes I need to put on rotate as they are so pretty, but at the moment it’s two dresses from japan I just got and I can’t stop wearing them. They are perfect for the summer. But I will get better at rotation.

    1. I get sad when certain items wear out too. But it's good that you are wearing things you love and wearing them until they can't be worn any longer. That's how it should be!
Rotation is a good idea, it means those absolute favourites will be around for a little longer.
The thing I dislike the most is having clothes that just don't get worn, I think it's kinda sad, like books that are only read once (or not at all!). It seems a shame, like they're not fulfilling their potential, not doing what they were made to do...

    1. Thank you. Most of the boots are secondhand, the hiking boots were a Christmas present from my husband, they were from ASOS.

  7. It helps that it can be paired up with so many things, as you show, and that it can be worn the year round. It would take me a very long time to get to 30 wears with a skirt, it's very rare I wear one.

    1. I used to live in jeans, but just decided one day to wear skirts more, I like the feeling of a skirt, particularly when the weather is nice.
