#30 Wears

Friday, January 29, 2021

A blue shirt purchased in September '18 has hit #30Wears, as has a stripe jumper that was added to my wardrobe a month later. It's true that it wouldn't take me so long to hit #30Wears if I had fewer clothes, but I don't, so it took me over two years. They're both still in good condition and will continue to be worn for a while longer.

Both my black, and grey jumper took just a little over a year to reach #30Wears. They're both excellent wardrobe staples and are still in good condition so I'll continue to wear them until they reach the end of their useful lives. It's not often that I wear something out completely but I think both of these will be threadbare before I can bear to part with them.

#30Wears is about wearing my clothes more before I part with them. The point is to buy less, wear what I have more often, and to keep items for longer. Buying fewer clothes is something I'm working on, but I still have more clothes in my possession than I realistically need.

I really like each item and am torn between keeping them all and wearing them until they wear out or donating / selling things I don't wear very often and having a more streamlined wardrobe. The conundrum here is that I wear things rarely because I have so many items, not because I don't like them.

I become weirdly attached to clothes and find it hard to part with them, and I love charity shopping and finding a bargain. I feel my wardrobe is destined to always be bursting at it's seams.

  1. I know I would definitely get to 30 wears with my clothes much faster than you do. I hate clothes shopping with a passion, haha. Shoes too. I'm quite happy to wear the things I like over and over until they wear out. Now let me loose in a craft shop and that's where the most damage to my purse is done.

    1. I WISH I liked clothes shopping a little less! Or at least found it easier to part with clothes. I love getting a lot of wear out of my clothes, and wearing them year after year.
I do like a craft shop, especially a wool shop!

  2. I have what some might call a capsule wardrobe but yes I certainly have done some 30 wears so i'm off to have a look (and make myself feel better for buying a load of new undies this week!)

    1. Enjoy the new undies! I don't often buy undies but it does feel nice when I do.
When I read about the idea of 30 wears I couldn't point at anything with any certainty and say 'that's been worn over 30 times' (except my ancient jeans), which is why I started counting. I am surprised that it takes me so long to reach 30 wears. Jeans always get there much faster than anything else, dresses take the longest.

  3. Thirty wears is good going, isn't it? It'd proably take me years to clock up that many wears with a lot of my dresses but I supppose as theuy're mostly secondhand already someone else has given them a few outings before I got my mitts on them!
I love shopping a bit too much, too. The joy of ebay is that I can watch things but not necessary buy them, the thrill is often in the finding rather than the owning. xxx

    1. I thought 30 wears was a lot but when I see that lot of clothes are still in very good condition I feel I should wear them a lot more, and most of these clothes are second hand too.
I wish I didn't love shopping so much. The best thing about charity shops is finding a something I really like at a bargain price, I just can't leave it behind. I think the answer is not visiting them so often.

  4. I'm not surprised those jumpers have made it to 30 wears. I love them both.
I have a black jumper that I'm sure I must have worn at least 30 times - I bought it when I first moved to Germany and it's come out every winter since. I'm wearing it right now in fact. And I'm sure the Primark dress from my last SIA post has been worn way more than 30 times! On the other hand fancy dress I bought for weddings, etc. are lucky if they've had 3 wears.

    1. The staples always make it to 30 wears reasonably quickly.
I always try to find a new-to-me dress for weddings, I use them as an excuse to buy something pretty so they don't often get worn more than once before I sell them on ebay, so 3 wears is an improvement on my efforts.

  5. Congratulations on reaching 30 wears for this well-loved workhorses in your wardrobe! Having such a crammed wardrobe, it'll take years until most of my clothes reach 30 wears, although I think some of my cardigans are in the running! I'm currently trying to do a purge, but I think I know how this will end :-) xxx

    1. Thanks! I am useless at purging my wardrobe, I'm better if I do it one piece at a time, which admittedly isn't as effective but getting rid of one thing feels easier. This month I decided a pink jumper has had it's day after 40 wears, it's in the charity bag waiting for when they reopen. I put it on one day and just knew I wouldn't be wearing it again.
Good luck with your purge - be ruthless!! :)

  6. Bravo to these garments! They have worked hard! They are all great items! I love the blue shirt and stripe jumper! I've been umming and ahing today over ordering something from Seasalt Cornwall as I have a 50% discount code on things which expired today. I had 2 striped tops in my basket up until the last minute (I did think of offering you if you wanted to get one too but then didn't want to be temptation!) but in the end, realised I didn't need them but what I did want is a really waterproof raincoat for winter so I bought one- I guess I broke my one item a month rule but only by one day (in fact 40minutes) and I really wanted to try a Seasalt winter raincoat and this is probably my only chance to get one at such a bargain price!

    1. All these things are real favourites, and except for the black jumper, they're secondhand.
You could always say the Seasalt raincoat is February's purchase as it won't be delivered until Feb...? I think if you've got the opportunity of 50% off a really well made brand, and you're buying something that you need, and you know will last a long time, then you've got to take the opportunity. The thing is you've bought two items this month, how many did you buy last January? How many items did you buy each month last year - I know you can't answer these with exact numbers, but I bet that even if you buy two items per month this year you'll still be buying a lot less than other years. I think it's a splendid idea. Keep on trying!

(and thanks for thinking of me, but keeping me from temptation!)
