Week Seven

Friday, May 01, 2020

This week has felt rather ordinary, I guess I'm getting used to this new normal.

The weather has resembled early Spring, which has helped my work motivation, as I'm not being tempted outside and away from my desk by the sunshine.

FaceTime has sated my need to spend time with others, and whilst it's certainly not the same as seeing someone in person, it's certainly better than not being able to see them at all.

Life seems to have settled. It feels like we just need to be patient for a while longer, and then our slow and careful journey to what will be the next version of our new normal can begin.

I have no idea how the lockdown will be lifted, I know that it'll be gradual, and that feels like the right thing to do. Whilst I'm looking forward to being able to see my favourite people, and can't wait for that to happen, I do feel a sense of trepidation at the thought of crowds of people. How we come out of lockdown is as important as why we went into it in the first place.

With talk of lockdown ending Andy has already seen an increase in traffic on the roads, and the lorry drivers he deals with have reported sitting in traffic for the first time in weeks. I know people are keen to get back to their normal lives, but there's no sense in ending lockdown until it is safe to do so.

I don't know what the coming week will bring, but for the first time in a few weeks I'm hopeful that it'll be positive.

How has your week been?

  1. Glad to hear you're settling in to the new normal!

I've had another lovely week - lots of reading and ticking jobs off the lists! I'm really hoping we get another three weeks of the current lockdown before anything eases (I know I'm probably about the only person in the UK hoping for that!) and I know it's not lockdown but actually going back to normal that I'm going to struggle with! Going back to work will be hard after this, haha!

    1. I don't think another three weeks is out of the question, and I think I'd cope just fine with that.
      I'm glad you're enjoying lockdown!

  3. I am worried about people getting impatient and taking risks and I really am worried about how it will be if they make schools go back too early- they keep talking about primary school kids being the first back but I had SUCH an awful time with the little ones in the last weeks as they just could not keep their distance and most of my lessons were spent telling them to go and wash their hands as they sat there sucking fingers, picking noses, coughing with mouths open and generally being gross- if they've caught anything, everyone else will definitely get it- I'm not sure the government understand that...

    1. I know people are frustrated, and I completely understand but this will all be for nothing if we come out of lockdown too early. I'm sure, and I hope, that the government have advisors who know and understand everything you've just said. I would've thought it would be better for high schools to go back first, although I have to admit my knowledge of education is limited.
With the consequences of getting this wrong being so catastrophic I'm certain the government will cautious, health has to come first, above all else.

  4. I hope lockdown continues, it seems very soon to come out of it but the economy is suffering so much I guess anything that can be done gradually will be - surprised that traffic would be stacking up, but our roads seem busier too.

  5. On the day that BoJo told us we were over the peak two people we knew died of Coronavirus. It's far too soon to strat thinking about easing lockdown in my humble opinion.
The weather hasn't helped this week, has it? Rain and grey skies sap my motivation. xxx

    1. The weather has helped me get more work work done, but it doesn't help the general mood of the situation, no.
It is still too early, I hope they take their time in bringing us out of this. Common sense must prevail here, surely?

  6. As from Monday, lockdown will slowly be lifted, in several phases. But they have decided that all shops can re-open on 11 May, if they take the necessary precautions. To be honest, I'm not happy with this at all. I would have liked this to be more gradual ... I just hope I'm wrong and all will be OK. xxx

    1. I guess even if the shops are open there will be those who still don't go out. Of course there will also be some who immediately start acting like nothing happened. All we can do is what feels right for us.

  7. But when lockdown ends it doesn't mean it's safe - it just means they (the government) are happy to allow more people to get ill and end up in the care of the NHS/Dead. It doesn't mean the virus risk has gone. I don't think people are thinking logically!!!!!
It's a worry. I wore a face scarf to town yesterday, might have to don it for ever more.... things are never going to be the same again

    1. Oh absolutely. It won't mean it's completely safe, it'll just mean lockdown has been lifted, but it will mean a little more freedom.
The risk of this virus will always be there, and people will continue to die from it, even after a vaccine has been created, but the risk will lessen. We will be changed by it as a nation, and as a global population, but a more normal, more stable way of life will return, along with a new way of life too... we just don't know what that will look like yet. But I do feel out of all the bad, positive things will emerge - eventually.

  8. I don't watch/read the news, so I wasn't aware that lockdown might be over soon - but it would explain the increase of visitors my neighbours have had over the last week! I agree with you, I hope we come out of lockdown gradually and safely. I don't think I'll be comfortable being out and about for a long time, and I have no idea how they'll handle reopening libraries.
I love your pretty rainbow :) Stay safe xxx

    1. The Prime Minister is addressing the nation on Sunday to let us know his plan for coming out of lockdown. I hope it's sensible, and slow, and safe! I'm sure it will be gradual, and I think many people will feel the same as us - apprehensive about public spaces - so I think there will be a large number of people that willing continue to stay at home as much as possible.
      Take care
