Monthly Resolutions

Wednesday, May 06, 2020

I've decided not to set any resolutions for the month of May. Whilst I usually like a to-do list, lockdown has brought about the need for me to just do what takes my fancy. In addition to resolutions I also made lists and plans for what to do in April but I didn't achieve many of these things, I was happy to be guided by my mood, and the weather instead.

So this month perhaps I'll just keep a record of everything I achieve and share it with you at the end of the month?

In April my resolutions were to mend my green skirt, fill my greenhouse, and tick off four DIY jobs. The first two happened, the last did not. What is it with me and DIY? We just don't seem to get along.

In a quiet mood one Sunday afternoon, I tacked a new zip into place in my green skirt. I'd intended to leave sewing it in properly, which I'd planned to do on the machine, until another day, but the mood took me to sew it in by hand. So that's what I did. It's not the neatest sewing ever, but it's a job done, and my green skirt is now back in action.

The greenhouse has been my haven over the passed month. I can spend ages just pottering about in there. I have mangetout, lettuce leaves, spinach, potatoes, beans, cucumber, chives, and a number of flowers all steadily growing.

And this week I (finally) received my order of seeds and have some tomato, cabbage, and pea seeds to add to my growing (pun intended) collection.

I also have a few stowaway plants that smuggled themselves into my greenhouse in a bag of compost. I'm waiting to see what they grow into, and I'm a bit miffed that, whatever they are, they're the best growers in the greenhouse! I just hope they're edible.

I'm set for most of May to be in lockdown. I've settled into it, and when it's lifted I doubt I'll be rushing out anywhere public anytime soon. I am looking forward to hugging my family though.

What have you got planned for May?

  1. Not making any to-do list or resolutions, and just doing what you fancy, is the best thing to do under the circumstances. When I heard my working hours would be reduced to two days a week, I mentally started making plans and if I'd gone through with them I would have run out of things to do by now. Instead, I'm just letting the mood of the day decide what I'm going to do, if anything. Well done on replacing the green skirt's zip. That photo of you wearing it in front of that Lilac is gorgeous, especially with the photo-bombing cat! Your greenhouse is so obviously your happy place, and I can't blame you for spending so much time in it. Apart from the garden centre, I'm not rushing anywhere public any time soon either. Not looking forward to all the shops re-opening here on Monday, as I might have to face a bit of a crowd when I'm going to the office. xxx

    1. It feels right to just go with it at the moment. Plans are all very well when time is tight, but now we have more time, and nowhere to go, the need for plans has lessened considerably. I'm enjoying the freedom that brings.
I'm pleased my green skirt is back in action, and I picked that particular photo based purely on my furry photo bomber :)
I'm looking forward to visiting a garden centre, that'll be the thing that tempts me to go out.
Hope all goes well on your commute on Monday.

  2. wow, you certainly have lots of interesting things happening in your greenhouse! Looking forward to hearing updates on what you grow. Like you, I could (and sometimes do) spend ages in the greenhouse. Mine is getting fuller by the day at the moment. So long as we can still get in and reach everything it'll be ok xx

    1. It's like my own completely visible, completely see through hideout! I love it. I've taken some cuttings this year that I'm hoping will take. And I have three oak tree saplings in there too, all doing well. I'll plant them out one day, and leave them for future generations to enjoy.
I love a full greenhouse, it always looks so sad in the autumn, when I tuck in it for the winter.

  3. Hear hear for no more lists! At least for now (I usually totally love a list!), I can't get through my to do lists and I've given up, apart from work which is giving me some structure, I'm taking this time to be free and do what I fancy (I do however have a long list of DIY projects to give to Joe, so I haven't sworn off lists completely!)

    1. I have a list for my husband too ;)
I love lists and plans, and I haven't given up entirely, I still have a meal plan :)
It's nice to have the opportunity to just do anything or nothing at all.

  4. think blogger lost my comment, possible repeat, am interested to know what the stowaway plants are. Didn't know you had a greenhouse - I would spend a lot of time in there too (don't have one) I remember how strong tomatos smelled in my grandma's greenhouse, and how nice and warm it was to be in there as a child :) You will be getting a great head start on your veggies from there. Look forward to seeing how things grow. that green skirt of yours has earned its keep a thousand times over, well done for putting a new zip in - that's something I find very difficult.

    1. Just the one comment, thank you for persevering :)
I love my greenhouse, it's a little on the battered side but I love it! I often eat my breakfast in there, or sit and read with a cat on my lap, although space is getting tight so I might have to remove the chair for a while. I'll keep you updated on the veggies.

  5. Your greenhouse is looking fabulous as is the green skirt! Well done for gettimng that zip back in, the cat looks thrilled to see you wearing it again!
I'm totally with you on just doing what the fancy takes you, there's no point in forcing yourself to do things if you're not in the mood, it inevitably goes wrong.
Today I'm going to play in the garden and make the most of the sunshine! xxx

  6. I have greenhouse envy! I really would like one!!! Not enough room for a proper one though! Your plants are looking great! I wish mine would grow a bit more. Still a bit scared to plant things out in case of inclement weather this weekend.
Your green skirt is so nice to see again and well done on the zip!!
