THIS YEAR

I said in my last Buyer's Archive post that I wasn't going to buy anything this month, but I didn't believe that when I wrote it anymore than you did when you read it. I've been very restrained though. The only thing I purchased was this coin purse.

I did wonder if a coin purse really counts as a wardrobe purchase but as I've counted a previous coin purse I felt I should include this one too, it's an accessory of sorts.

My current one is three years old. I like fabric ones and I don't see them in charity shops very often, especially ones that haven't been used. There are plenty of vinyl or plastic ones to be found but I don't like them. And this one has a button so...

LAST YEAR

I only purchased one item last August too. A secondhand mustard yellow bag for £4.75. I used it a lot but it was plastic and it started to split and flake after a few weeks. I tried to mend it with some very basic embroidery skills but I ruined it, and that was the end of that.

It was fun while it lasted and I'm keeping my eyes open for another bag in this colour as it proved to be rather versatile.

Total for August: £2.00

Total so far for 2019: £275.23

Total at this time last year: £247.41

Left of £500.00 budget: £224.77

Items purchased: 45 (pre-loved: 40 / new: 5)

One of my new years resolutions was to spend less, and buy fewer new items. Last year I purchased 71 items (63 in 2016). I'm already up to 45 so I need to start being a little more discerning with my purchases from here on in.

For the fourth year running I'm keeping track of my spending on clothes and accessories with A Buyer's Archive.

  2. What a cute purse, Hazel! I'm admiring your restraint. Mind you, I haven't been buying much this month either. Still way more than you though. As for your overall total for this year, surely 45 items isn't too bad, with only 4 more months to go. And I'm really impressed that 40 out of those 45 are pre-loved! xxx

    1. 45 isn't bad at all, but I do want to keep that number as low as possible. I've been trying to wear everything in my wardrobe as part of Slow Fashion Season and it's highlighted how many clothes I have and how little they get worn as a result.
I am pleased that most of my purchases are pre-loved though, I've found some superb items this year!

  3. I had that purse it out off boots, I kinda do broke my buying no new . I popped into the big Asda at Carlisle we’re they had a 2.00 rail and I bought 2.00 pairs of Culottes. One pair is getting dyed black, as I don’t do white. But I just couldn’t say no. I also picked up a pair of chunky sandals for 3.50. We don’t get many bargains over here.
Kind of kicked myself for not picking up a Jumpsuit, but I was being good! Plus it’s 40 miles to get to Carlisle from Ambleside. Mums care packages are keeping me happy as well as eBay. They joys of rural living

    1. I wouldn't have thought to look in Boots for a purse.
You can't ignore a £2 sale rail. I think it's OK to buy new as long as you wear the items you buy and don't buy too much. The no new rule is a good experiment but sometimes a new purchase is needed, aqnd if you don't often get the opportunity of good bargains it's worth taking advantage of when you can.
Luckily I'm rural but not remote.

    2. I do agree, I miss living in a town when it comes to buying clothes for the family, but you just have to be creative or end up looking either like a farmers wife ( no pun intended) , a hippie or if you are going to tackle the old man. Fashion round here is not priority. I mean I have just spent £80 in my sons school coat as the weather over here is so variable and they need decent coats and shoes . We are quite lucky as the school head doesn’t mind them wearing walking boots if they so choose to do.
      But I don’t miss the pollution. That’s a plus.

  4. That's really cute! How funny that August is the month in which you only buy one item and it's something that will hold money in it! Is there some subconscious message about saving your pennies??? I thought I was doing well with August but then I caved on the new items when in Florence and ended up buying some beautiful blue leather boots and a pair of blue linen trousers!

    1. Maybe you're onto something there! I do tend to spend more in the summer so maybe by August I'm starting to feel guilty!
Sounds like you've purchased some staple items, sometimes these unintended items end up being wardrobe heroes.

  5. What a pretty purse! I'm a bit of a sucker for vintage ones and managed to acquire quite a few this year so I put them in the stall and sold the lot (great excuse to start buying more!) xxx

  6. How sad your mustard bag gave up on you, I did like that one. I find bags get shabby so easily and there's no repair to flaking vinyl or leather. xx

    1. Leather does last longer but is harder to find in charity shops in my experience. I don't mind bags looking a little lived in but it flaked so much and my repair attempts failed miserably!
