The Summer of Wearing It All | Part 4

Tuesday, August 06, 2019

We're almost halfway through the Slow Fashion Season. I'm yet to buy any new clothing, although I did buy a lot of secondhand items last month! This month I've challenged myself to buy nothing at all. I've worn a different outfit everyday since June 21st and I've still got many unworn items. I don't feel I need to add anything else in to the mix, so I'm staying away from the charity shops - they're just too tempting!

The items above are rarely worn (with the exception of the jeans, which always get worn a lot). The red tunic hasn't been seen on the blog (or worn) since the summer of 2013! It's well and truly on my radar now and will get the wearing it deserves. Isn't it pretty?

This lot above are items I used to wear a frequently, but not so much recently. The paisley dress was my first ever attempt at visible mending after the waistband frayed. And the yellow skirt was brought back to life with some fabric dye a few years ago. The wide leg trousers still need to be taken up as they are trip hazard long - even with heels!

The only recent purchase here is the sequin bag in the first outfit. I bought it to take to Latitude, but it was always going to be something that I used again. I read on the Barnardo's Instagram feed that this summer 7.4 million single-use outfits will be purchased for festivals by us Brits. It's utterly horrifying. How do we change this idea that clothes are disposable?

  1. The red tunic is so pretty! I can't believe it took you this long to wear it again.
I have taken a leaf out of your book and am trying to wear clothes that don't come out very often (not a different outfit every day though1). When I went to meet a friend last weekend I wore a dress that I hadn't worn for 2 years! The last time I wore it was for a friend's birthday party but I decided it was casual enough to be a normal summer dress and come out for a day trip.

    1. Yay! That's lovely to hear, I'm glad you're wearing the rarely worn. I've really enjoyed wearing so many of my old favourites.

  2. It's not only clothes that seem to be disposable, it's tents too! We've had our tent since 2011 and it is still going strong- the idea of getting one and just leaving it at a festival is abhorrent- similar with outfits- this is why I dislike it at fancy dress parties and world book day where a whole outfit is bought from eBay and it is some horrid cheap, plastic material that is never worn again. I ALWAYS make sure my costumes contain items I have already got or would use again.
I love your outfits and like Bev, I am surprised the red tunic has been so underused till now! I notice the lovely Joy Luche dress with the red collar- always liked that one!

    1. It's because you can pick up a small tent for £20 on Amazon. I do admire how you create your World Book Day outfits instead of simply buying them. I saw on TV the other day a library that rents out children's fancy dress costumes, which I thought was a wonderful idea.
The red tunic is lovely, I'm so glad I've rediscovered it, and the Louche dress, I used to wear that so much! I'm enjoying the Slow Fashion Season.

  3. I like your red tunic a lot, it's flexible too. I have been buying more preloved and having a wonderful time with Slow Fashion, I thought it would be hard but I definitely don't find the sales interesting at all, all those mounds of unwanted clothes, prices slashed and still unwanted and crowds of people hungrily snatching them up, they remind me of blinkered horses!

    1. That's a good way to describe it! I can't remember the last time I shopped in a sale on the high street, they just don't hold any interest for me anymore.
So glad you're enjoying Slow Fashion Season!

  4. I must admit that my clothes get worn time and time again, mainly because I hate clothes shopping and I'll do anything to avoid it.

    1. I could do with feeling like that once in a while! Keeping a tally has really opened y eyes as to how little I wear some items, I really need to stop buying more! Your hatred of clothes shopping is very eco friendly :)

  5. I've been trying to wear things that haven't seen the light of day for some time too. Yesterday I wore the equivalent of your gorgeous red tunic, a dress that got so many compliments that I'm wondering why hadn't worn it for so long. I'm also loving both blue and white dresses and the red and white one in your second collage. I applaud you for avoiding the charity shops and thus temptation. I haven't been able to resist ... xxx

    1. I think with many items it's just a case of out of sight, out of mind. Some of these dresses have been in a suitcase under my bed for an age, so I'd simply forgotten all about them.
It's nice to wear things that haven't been worn in a while isn't it? It's like going shopping without having to go anywhere or spend any money!
I've avoided the charity shops so far, but I'm making no promises.
