Photo An Hour | Nov '18

November 17th was the chosen day for Photo An Hour this month. As with last month I didn't realise until I was scrolling through my Instagram feed at lunchtime but my morning was pretty standard.

Weekends don't really hold the same meaning for me as Andy always works and as a self employed person the working week doesn't really exist. I work as and when I need to.

So my day started as any other day does. Feed cats, make tea, empty or load the dishwasher, put some washing in the machine, sort out the litter tray. Breakfast, shower, make a to-do list for the day.

I had two things on my list for the day, to make progress with decorating the bedroom (possibly even get it finished!) and get some knitting done.

Fresh out of the shower I found Socks curled into a ball and had to fight the urge to climb back into bed and join in him in his snoozing.

Come lunchtime I'd managed to do one of the things on my list - knitting. It seems I'm incapable of finishing a project before I start another. At some point in the near future this pile of body parts will resemble three bunny rabbits.

By the time 1 o'clock rolled around Andy had been home for lunch - baked beans on toast - and he'd made me a cuppa before heading back out to work for the afternoon. I sat contemplating my next move.

By 2 o'clock I was upstairs in the bedroom. I'd sanded the threshold step so I could stain it, and I'd done some touching up on the skirting boards that I'd painted the day before. This isn't the carpet, it's the ancient underlay. We've been looking at carpet samples for weeks. They're all so similar - mid brown with a slight fleck - we couldn't tell the difference between them so we've just opted for the least expensive of the lot. I plan to buy a huge rug to cover most of it anyway (not that I've revealed this plan to Andy yet...).

At 3 o'clock I was waiting for the stain to dry and had grabbed my book hoping to finally finish it. I'd been reading this book since the beginning of the month and wanted to get it read. I'd been reading a few pages here and there and as a result the story felt fractured. I needed a good chunk of time to concentrate on it. Now that harvest is over Andy is home before bedtime I tend to read a lot less, but if I take too long over a book I often forget important plot points!

I light the fire everyday at around 4 o'clock before it gets dark. I can't believe that it's mid November and we haven't had to turn the central heating on yet. I know we will soon but this is unheard of (the temperature has dropped since and the heating went on for the first time November 20th).

Still on the sofa at 5 o'clock, still with a cat on my lap, and a book in hand, Andy came home and joined us. Which is where we stayed other than to cook and eat supper. I had hoped to nip up to the bedroom and give the step another coat of stain but I just didn't have the motivation. It was far nicer to stay on the sofa, in the warm, with my husband and the girl cat.

The evening was predictably spent watching Strictly Come Dancing.

  1. I can't believe you've lasted without the central heating all this time, ours went on ages ago. I'm not surprised it eventually went on yesterday though, it's much colder again this week. You're so good at making toys, I just don't have the patience for all those teeny tiny bits, and all the sewing up, urgh!

    1. We can keep the lounge warm with the fire so it hasn't been too bad, and it's been pretty mild here.
I like knitting toys because they're so quick to do. Larger items, that take longer to make and put together make me lose patience.

  2. We've had the heating on for a month or so now as we've had some cold nights and cold mornings around here (a dusting of snow this morning!) but haven't yet lit the fire! It's a bit novel actually, just flicking a switch and having heating... this is the first time I've lived in a house that had that kind of heating, as opposed to needing to light the fire for heating and hot water!

    1. Oh my goodness, that must be a bit of a faff at times. There's nothing like convenience!

I'm not ready for snow yet, I've only just got my head around the fact I need to wear a proper coat.

I love the fire, and we only use the central heating when we have too. Being at home most days means I can keep the fire going nicely.

  3. It has suddenly got quite a bit colder, hasn't it? We finally got the heating on too, but with the sudden drop in temperature, I just couldn't get warm at first. I've had the same with some books, which for some reason take too long to get through, and I can't put my finger on the reason why. It must be wonderful to have Andy home a bit earlier now! xxx

    1. It has, we've had a flurry of snow locally, I'm not ready for snow!!
Having Andy home earlier is lovely, he's started to be around on Sunday afternoons too. It's a good reason to look forward to autumn!

  4. We only turned our central heating on yesterday but our kitchen floor has been warm for ages, we have underfloor heating but it seems to have been warm we are hoping because of hot water not because our heating has been on all year!??

    1. Oh goodness! I hope it hasn't been on all summer. Some stones feel naturally warm to the touch and if the heat of the sun is on them they can soak up the heat - let's hope that's what's happened!

  5. We had our heating back on weeks ago! You certainly got a lot done that day, the knitted body parts look interesting. The carpet sounds practical. I once had the whole house done in white pile which showed every footprint when walked on, luckily it was on a 100 per cent money back no,quibble guarantee if,you werent delighted, and i got it changed to blue, i doubt if deals like that happen these days, i was lucky!

    1. The body parts are slowly taking shape and now resemble animals rather than a woollen massacre!
I could never contemplate white for carpeting, I have one grubby husband, and two grubby cats too many. It was a good deal, I've certainly never heard of a deal like that.

  6. Will we get to see the bunnies when they're done?

I kept my heating off for as long as possible, but it's gone on in my office today. I'm freeeezing!

    1. I'll pop a photo on Instagram when they're finished.
I try not to rely on the central heating but some days you just have to give in!
