This Week #11 | Being Grateful

Friday, December 01, 2017

It's been a quiet week, I've been slowly returning to work, doing a few hours a day. I've spent some time at work with Andy (nothing strenuous, just keeping him company whilst he drives around checking on things). We've worked our way though a huge portion of the Game of Thrones boxset, and I've finally started preparing for the festive season.

One of the pieces of advice I've received over the past few weeks has been to remind myself of the things I'm grateful for. It's something I should do all year round, but now seems like a good time to start.

I'm grateful for being treated to a mini manicure. A bit of pampering can never be a bad thing. Me time, self care - whatever you want to call it - it's so important to take the time to do something for yourself, particularly when you need some cheering up. Neat shiny nails make me smile.

I'm grateful for online shopping so I don't have to face the hoards of shoppers in town. I love Not On The High Street for independent retailers, and I will pop out to my favourite independent stores soon, but the bulk of my shopping has already been done, and it feels great.

I'm very grateful to have the luxury of time. After what's happened most people would be expected to return to work after two weeks. It seems too soon to me, grief doesn't have a time frame. As I've regained strength after surgery I've been able to spend a few hours a day at my desk without feeling pressured, it's been immensely helpful to feel some normality returning.

I'm grateful for my clients, who have been patient and very understanding (and two of them sent me huge amounts of chocolate).

I'm grateful for the messages and support I've received from my friends. It's hard to know what to say in situations such as these, but I'm so grateful people haven't shied away from getting in touch. Their messages have really helped, as have all the comments from you.

How has your week been? Tell me about your favourite part of your week.

xx

  1. I'm so glad you're taking plenty of time out. Two weeks seems far too soon. Good to hear that you're being well cared for by Andy and your clients have been so kind and understanding, too.
This week's been quiet for us although we braved the arctic conditions to go to an exhibition preview at our town art gallery last night - free wine and contemporary art, two of my favourite things! xxx

    1. I'm so lucky to be in a position where I can do what my body tells me. I'd hate to be stuck at a desk 9 - 5 at the moment. I'm currently indulging every whim. If I want to sit quietly, I do. If I want to work, I do. If I want to go for a walk, attack the housework, watch a film, potter in the garden, I do. And I think being in this situation is highly beneficial to well being.

  4. I think you have to let grief take its course, and to take care of yourself, so two weeks indeed seem rather short to me. So, definitely do indulge in some pampering, and huge amounts of chocolate, obviously! xxx

    1. Absolutely, you can't hide from it, and nothing good can come of trying to.
Today I'm having a long soak in the bath and then I'm going to do some work so I can have a day off today, I'm going to spend it with my Mum in Felixstowe - being by the sea will be rather bracing!!

  5. I hope you will continue to take all the time you need. Grieving is something we seem to avoid in the West but it's a healthy process that helps you move forward I think.

    1. I will. I do believe that self care is incredibly important at all times, not just when times are tough. I'm waiting for the grief to arrive, and when it does I'm going to look it in the eye and tell it to do it's worst. I'll allow myself to acknowledge it, feel it, and let it do it's thing.

  6. Amen to online shopping! If I can get through the festive season without having to set foot into a shop, I consider that a result. The highlight of my week was going to see Rocky Gervais in Leicester - his first gig in the relatively small Demontfort Hall. He was ace as usual. Glad to hear you're starting to feel a bit better - remember to take your time and not put too much pressure on yourself. Sending best wishes to you and Andy x

    1. My shopping is so nearly done and I haven't had to face one crowded shop yet.
I love Ricky Gervais, I'd really like to see him live.
