18th July 2020. An early start at 5:30am, a little earlier than usual but I was awake and didn't see any point in staying in bed.

6am
The greenhouse, container pots, and hanging baskets have been watered.
I noticed my first tomatoes of the year. Only yesterday I was saying that I hadn't got any yet and today these appear! I wonder if this works with other things, because I'm yet to win the lottery...

7am
Juice and reading. I’ve been enjoying dipping in and out of this book. Today I read the chapter on England and how the word 'Jolly' is inextricably linked to Englishness. There’s lots of talk about the weather too.
Husband has just left for work and I’m now off for a bath.

8am
Bathed, dressed, washing machine is running, dishwasher is half emptied, porridge is on, lemon and honey water made. Now contemplating my exciting day of housework and tidying.
#weekending #adulting

Between the photos - I've finished emptying the dishwasher, topped up the dishwasher salt, and put salt tablets into the water softener, decided on what to cook for supper, checked I have all necessary ingredients, and got what I need out of the freezer to defrost. And I've jotted down a few items I need to add to my shopping list, and caught up with some blog reading.

9am
Let the watering of the houseplants commence! I like to fill all the sinks in the house and let them soak for a while.
#houseplants #gardenindoors

Between the photos - put a second load of washing in, hung the first load on the washing line, cleaned the cat litter tray, vacuumed the hallway, kitchen, lounge, dining room, the side hallway, and downstairs loo. And yet when Andy gets home and asks what I've been up to I tend to say "oh not much, just a bit of housework".

10am
I’m not the only one who vacuums their ceiling, right?

11am
Grocery order underway...

Noon
I really should be cleaning the bathrooms but as it's one of my least favourite jobs (along with cleaning the oven) I'm putting it off and rooting through my sewing basket for some face mask material. I've ordered some elastic, and downloaded a pattern, and I'm eager to get going.

1pm
I've had lunch and decided not to wait for the elastic to arrive, I can sew it in at a later date.

2pm
Here it is! After delays caused by a phone conversation with my husband, and a WhatsApp chat with my Mum, it's ready and awaiting it's elastic straps. I didn't follow the instructions to the letter as I didn't have the elastic (and the pattern I used called for bias binding anyway) or a nose wire as I plan to wear it under the bridge of my glasses (in the hope that it'll stop my lenses steaming up), having one on top of the other would be uncomfortable.

3pm
Cleaning bathrooms. No photo required.

4pm
Retreated to my bedroom with a cuppa to read another chapter of this. This chapter was about Finland and their fondness of drinking beer in their underpants

5pm
Garden wandering with the girl cat. The Ammi I grew from seed.
#getoutside #caturday

I'm conscious that when I'm busy with work (and I have been recently) life gets very sedentary, so I'm trying to go for a walk every evening. Some nights I get a stomp on to get my heart rate up but today I just felt like taking a stroll and breathing the air deep down into my lungs. I took the time to look at all the details of the garden, making a mental note of what needs to be done, changes I'd like to make, things I need to Google e.g. why are my forget-me-nots mildewy? But mostly I just enjoyed it, the company of my chatty girl cat, and the early evening sunshine.

6pm
Meal prep. This is King Prawn Jambalaya from a Slimming World recipe book. Not that I'm 'doing' Slimming World, my Mum is (although, truth be told, lockdown inactivity has added a few pounds to my frame, mostly around the middle). She says that some of the recipes are delicious, so I thought I'd give this a go.
#cookingfromscratch

I felt that this recipe was missing something, it's part of an 'every recipe only has five ingredients' book and I think it lost something in the translation. I Googled other Jambalaya recipes and found that I could add onions, garlic, spring onions, spicy sausage, and something called Old Bay seasoning. I don't think it's available in the UK but I did find a recipe to mix up my own with a mere 18 different herbs and spices (who even does that?!). I enjoyed it enough to persevere with the recipe, it's so easy to cook - just whack it all in the pan and simmer. I need some new recipes for my repertoire, and the easier they are the more likely they are to be made and served.

7pm
These fields won't be golden for much longer. Harvest has started. Lone evenings from now until September.
#fizz #cheers #harvest #justtheone

This year, with reduced social activity, I think harvest might feel quite lonely. I'm very good at being on my own most of the time, I really rather like it, but I'll need to start venturing out a little more so I don't go completely mad. Please send help if I start posting gibberish over the next few months...

8pm
I'm sat at my desk writing this post ready to publish tomorrow, but progress is being hindered by the girl cat. This is what my working day looks like too. I have a very soft and snuggly cat bed on the end of my desk to try and tempt them out of the way but it seldom works. I once lost the use of the spacebar on my keyboard because it was clogged with cat hair. True story.

9pm
Husband arrives home. He eats a cold Jambalaya and says it's delicious but could do with having more prawns in it (he has a point), and I drink a cup of camomile tea with honey. We chat about our day, watch a little news, and head off to bed before 10pm.

I hope you had a lovely weekend. Thanks to Jane and Louisa for hosting #PhotoAnHour.

  2. Another early riser! I'm like you, if I'm awake I get up, especially if it's sunny!
What a delightful sounding day. The masks look fab, your growings lush and the cats gorgeous!
I don't own a vacuum cleaner but have a rather snazzy vintage feather duster which Jon's lashed to a pole so we can reach the ceilings.
I think we've all had a little taste of your life during harvest time with lockdown. Thank goodness for our blog friends to keep us company! xxx

    1. If it had been raining I would've stayed where I was, but you can't beat an early morning on a nice day.
I think I might invest in a feather duster, the vacuum cleaner gets heavy after a while, and it does take a while to get rid of all the cobwebs!
Yes, thank goodness for blog friends, and Instagram. What a fabulous thing technology can be.

  3. I've just been out to remove the side shoots on my tomato plants and noticed the first few tomatoes on my plants too. There's lots of flowers too so I should get a decent crop. It's a busy time for farmers, I hope you don't get too lonely whilst he's gone all day.

    1. I think I should've removed more shoots but they seem to be doing OK despite that. I dug up my first potato plant today and had a good crop, I'm now planning my evening meal around them.
I'm used to Andy not being around much as he works 7 days a week, but he won't be home until 9pm most nights now, he'll go to work earlier, and will rarely be able to come home for lunch so I'll notice the difference. I am used to it, but in previous years I've been able to go out and see people which seems more difficult this year, but I'll find a way, FaceTime is an excellent invention :)

  4. I'm usually an early riser, though not as early as 5.30, but lately it seems I need lots of sleep. Yay for the first toms of the year! Garden first are always exiting, aren't they? I love the sound of that book and I'm amazed at what you've already achieved by 9 am. It does make me feel quite lazy! Love the fabric for your masks. I haven't made any myself, but my stepdaughter did, plus I bought some. I love having a bit of choice, as it's set to become part of one's outfit. King Prawn Jambalaya sounds delicious, I'm always on the lookout for easy recipes to add to our repertoire. Jos does most of the cooking but he's quite a traditional cook. Phoebe doesn't do laps, but she often lays next to me when I'm blogging. She likes the company and I can hear her purring away, which is very relaxing! xxx

    1. My Saturday mornings are always really productive, I get the bulk of my housework done and then the rest of the day is mine, unless I have something planned in which case, I do it on Sunday instead, but there's not much in the diary these days!
I will make some more masks just to have a choice, my Mum sent me a few that she'd made, the pleated kind, but I fancied having a go at a shaped one.
I've never had a proper Jambalaya so I don't know what it's supposed to taste like but I might share my recipe when I've (to my mind) perfected it.
Tink is very much a lap cat, I can hardly sit down without her trying to jump up. If she can't be on my lap she likes to be close. Socks can be very affectionate but doesn't do laps all that often, when he does it feels very special. Funny little creatures :)

    1. They will be, as soon as the elastic arrives, which should be tomorrow. I'm looking forward to making a few more in different materials. I knew all those fabric squares would come in handy one day :)

  7. It was a busy day! I do love just pottering in the greenhouse and garden. Glad your tomatoes are making an appearance. Already some fields have turned from gold to harrowed stubble round here, it's really sad xx

    1. A nice day though, I do like to potter and keep busy. It is sad to see the crops go but necessary, and they'll be back to drill them again soon and around we go again.
