My Weekend #09 & 10

Tuesday, March 13, 2018

My plans for last weekend were postponed due to the snow. It seems odd to say that now, the snow seems like such a long time ago, almost all evidence of it has disappeared. I was meant to be meeting a friend for a catch up and charity shop rummage, but the roads were too hectic for either of us to make it.

So instead of buying clothes I decided to mend some, and turned my attention to my enormous mend pile. I had three items with frayed hems or seams that needed mending, and a shirt that I wanted to remove the collar and make into a grandad style. This doesn't really make much of a dent in the mend pile but it means I have these things ready for my spring capsule wardrobe; instead of wishing I could wear these items, I can!

This weekend my main plan was to see my Mum on Sunday, Mother's Day. It was lovely to spend time with my her and her husband, and eat the enormous roast chicken dinner Andy cooked, but I was distracted, a little lost in my own thoughts. I found Mother's Day hard.

That evening, in an effort to occupy my mind, I decided to have a go at embroidery. I've always wanted to give it a try, and a recent pinning spree has added fuel to the fire. I found a quick star tutorial, grabbed some scrap material and had a go. Yeah, it's something that's gonna feature in my life again, and soon!

It was my wish at the beginning of the year to avoid that Sunday night feeling of a weekend wasted. My goal was to have a plan in place for the coming weekend by each Friday evening. These were two weekends well spent, I think. The mend pile was tackled, I spent some quality time with family, and I tried my hand at a new skill.

What have you been up to?

  1. I've never done any embroidery but I have embroidery which my nana did during the war, it's really beautiful and should really inspire me but it's something I've never really taken a great interest in.

    1. I've always admired it and thought it would be something I'd enjoy, I've been eyeing up kits on Etsy, and watching YouTube tutorials. I think it's going to be my next obsession.
Your Nana's embroidery is something to treasure, but if it holds no interest as a hobby it doesn't matter - you have all your beautiful knitting - all those lovely socks :)

  2. Every little helps, even if it is only making a small dent in your mending pile. I am trying not to put off my mending for too long, as it can get overwhelming. We have a charity shop event and a flea market last weekend, but I still managed to do some mending (less than you!), and I sorted out my belts, which were all over the place. I also bagged up some things for charity. xxx

    1. That's how I look at it. And now I've started maybe, just maybe, it'll spur me on to get the rest of it done. I'm thinking if I make time for it one weekend, make a plan to do it, then 2018 might be the year I finally conquer the mend pile! Hurrah!

      Sounds like a productive weekend.

  3. Sorry you found Mother's Day so hard, Hazel. Those stars look great! I'm not sure I'm patient enough to turn my hand to anything crafty. I've got quite a domestic weekend coming up myself. Mr P is working on Saturday and at the football on Sunday so I like to use the time to have a crack at cooking (something I'm not good at at all). I'm planning veggie shepherd's pie for Saturday and veggie sausage casserole for Sunday - both will be accompanied by Desert Island Discs and red wine. Have a lovely weekend x

    1. that's a shame, when that happens I try to make it into a relaxing weekend - watch a dvd or two, start a puzzle, do some colouring.
Hope the snow goes away again soon

  6. Sorry you didn't get to see Sophie- I am still sad I couldn't make it! Those embroidered stars are lovely! I see those on the lapels of a white shirt or a nice cardigan!
