A Buyer's Archive | 2017

Here's every item of clothing, and accessories I purchased in 2017. It looks like a lot doesn't it? And I'm surprised to say I bought more this year than last, even though I spent less.

I haven't yet stopped buying items in charity shops without trying them on, and I've made a few ebay purchases that didn't fit, and couldn't be returned, so I still have a number of items that haven't been worn, and won't ever be. But they hang around in my wardrobe because I say I'm going to get them all on listed ebay, but it doesn't happen. This seems to be a recurring theme in these round up posts. Some habits die hard.

I did occasionally make an impulse purchase, but these are at a minimum now, when I buy something I always ask myself if it fits in with my current capsule wardrobe, if the answer is 'no', it doesn't get purchased. If I don't think I'll wear something 30 times, it doesn't get purchased. Luckily the items that I felt I simply 'had to have' (the green skirt, the California tee, the burgundy boots, the stripy jumper) fitted my capsule with ease.

I'd say that there is a pretty even split between things being worn a lot, things been worn occasionally, and things that have never being worn and are destined for ebay. Only three items have been donated so far. The rest will be donated when I get fed up of looking at the pile and realise that I'll never get them listed.

The question is - am I happy with my purchases? I am, yes. I bought some things that weren't right, for whatever reason, but for the most part I feel I bought some lovely items. Things that I feel I'll wear again and again.

For 2018, I'm wondering if I can I manage a spending ban every other month? Would this just make me spend more during the 'can spend' months? January, BTW, is already can-spend month!

  1. I'm glad you're happy with last year's purchases and the disasters are few and far between. there's some lovely things in your collage.
I think a spending ban is a bit harsh, even if it is every other month. It'd be sod's law that you see your dream item four weeks before you're allowed to get it. xxx

    1. I hadn't thought of that! But you know I'd buy it anyway ;) If it hadn't been for a sudden and irresistible need for colour in December I'd have finished the year within my budget so maybe a spending ban is a little over the top (didn't take much to dissuade me did it?!)

  2. I agree with Vix about the spending ban being a bit harsh ... Overall, you did well last year, with lots of good buys! I guess everyone's got a failure now and then. I usually try on things, but when there's a sale at Think Twice and there's a huge queue, I sometimes take a chance, then if it doesn't fit, I'll pass it on to one of my friends or keep it to sell at our local flea market next July. I wouldn't be very good at sticking things on Ebay ... xxx

    1. I've decided the spending ban was a sill idea, its not as if I spent a huge amount over my budget. I think I'd be happier if I'd sold more (anything!) on ebay, so I'll have to set aside a day one weekend and just get it done

  3. I think you've done well with your purchases this year. The main thing is that you're considering what you buy now and making sure it's something that's going to fit well in your wardrobe and that you're going to get the wear out of it. I find it hard to motivate myself to list things on Ebay but when I do, and an item sells, it encourages me to list more. I've made a few hundred pounds on Ebay this year.

    1. I do feel I'm making more considered purchases, which is a nice feeling.
The thing with ebay is that it's not actually that hard or time consuming to do, I just can't seem to muster the enthusiasm to do it. I should think about the money I could make :)
