Week Six | Reading, Watching, Making

Monday, April 27, 2020

For this week's lockdown installment I thought I'd followed Susie's lead and do a Reading, Watching, Making style post.

Reading

On Saturday finished reading The Stranger Diaries by Elly Griffiths. It's really good, very engaging, and although I knew who the killer wasn't, I didn't figure out who it was. I often figure out a whodunnit a few chapters before the end, but not this time.

Everyday by David Levithan. Another good read - you know it's going to be good if Patrick Ness says it's 'a wonder'. It's an interesting story, easy to read, easy to get lost in.

Another Day by David Levithan. It's Everyday but from the another point of view. It's not as good as the first as you know what happens, but still an enjoyable read.

It's not like me to read three books in a week, but I'm really enjoying the escapism a book provides. I started a book by Heidi Swain on Friday and am over half way through already.

Watching

Lucifer. I'm already at the end of season two.

The Great British Sewing Bee. I'm watching this on iPlayer, so every Thursday I'll be catching up. I like Joe Lycett as presenter.

Sarah Millican IGTV How To Be Champion Storytime. Sarah is reading from her book How To Be Champion. Listening to her read it is even better than reading the book for myself. It never fails to make me smile, it's five minutes of silliness each day.

Making

Cherry Cake. I think Andy could get used to a weekly bake, and as it takes very little time I don't see why this can't continue after lockdown.

Banana Oat Cookies. I purchased some bananas and purposefully left them to go really brown so I could make these (the browner they are the more bananary the flavour).

An eye patch (see below).

Dressing up

My weekly work Zoom meetings often have a theme. This week it was 'Nautical'. The only option I had was to go pirate. A red scarf, a handmade felt eye patch, a few neckerchiefs, and an earring and I was all set.

Hanging out

A Family Quiz Night on Zoom. We all had to come up with six questions, wear something on our head and bring a bottle. We went for questions on Christmas, I wore a long forgotten pair of Minnie Mouse ears, and opened a bottle of Prosecco I was given for my birthday last year (I'm surprised it lasted this long).

The sun made it hard for me to concentrate on work, and I felt a little low towards the end of the week so this week I'm hoping to get back into the swing of working and try to stick to my routine a little more. It's supposed to rain so the temptation to be outside will certainly wane, but it's always dry in the greehouse ;)

Hope you're keeping well, take care
xx

  1. I'm so pleased to see that the Sewing Bee is back on TV. There isn't much on at the moment so this is something to look forward to each week. It looks as if there's some good sewers amongst the contestants this time too. Yum, your baking looks delicious.

    1. The contestants do seem very accomplished this series. I loved some of the tea dresses they made last week. It does make me want to drag out my sewing machine, but my skills are limited!
The bakes were yummy, neither lasted very long...

  2. We've been watching Richard Osman's House of Games. It's such a fun distraction.

  3. I really love Lucifer! We've watched it all now, I can't remember if there's another series to come or not but I do hope so! I've also been baking over the last couple of weeks - which is great as I don't usually have (or at lease allow!) the time for it. I'm always tempted by Elly Griffiths books by the covers but I keep resisting as there seem to be so many of them and I have enough books on the 'to be read' shelves as it ism haha!

    1. I've just started season 3, I always feel a little bit sad when I've watched all episodes. I've got New Amsterdam and Outlander to catch up on when I've finished Lucifer.
I'd like to continue baking when lockdown is over, it's such a nice thing to do.
The Ruth Galloway Mysteries by Elly Griffiths are plentiful, The Stranger Diaries is, I believe, a stand alone book, and well worth a read.

  4. I'm just watching the Sewing Bee as I type! Very excited it is back! I like the sound of the books and I feel I must give Elly Griffiths a go after you kept talking about her when we met.
Your pirate costume is amazing! And you have such beautiful eyes!
I've not made any cake though we've been regularly on the bread wagon!

    1. I loved the tea dresses, especially the one with pockets and the bell sleeves, it was so simple but absolutely beautiful!
Did I mention Elly Griffiths a lot, I hadn't realised.
I was quite pleased with my pirate outfit, not bad for a cobbled together costume. I've always wanted to dress up as Captain Jack Sparrow, and this is probably as close as I'll get.
Maybe I'll try to bake some bread, or bread rolls...
Thank you for the compliment on my eyes.

  5. Thank you for reminding me about the sewing bee, it's one of my favourites!
C has been baking and I've been feeling obliged to keep eating...

    1. The first episode is on iPlayer already so you can catch up :)
The only drawback with baking is the need to eat it, but it's all so delicious!

  6. You look adorable in your themed outfits!
That book looks right up my street, I do enjoy a gripping crime novel. Jon's attempting some bread making in the next few days, I don't really eat cakes and sweet stuff but your baking looks very good.
Wasn't The Bee great? I loved the wraparound skirt with the women's faces.

    1. Thanks :)
I haven't baked bread since I was at school, it feels a little daunting but I'm sure I could create something edible!
The Bee was fab! I liked the chap that made the faces skirt, I think he'll do really well. And the other chap with the beard seems very capable too. Looking forward to the next episode!

  7. I'm always telling myself I should watch the Sewing Bee, but then I forget. I am going downstairs and program it for tomorrow after I've finished writing this comment! I thought I would read more now that I have the time but, although it all started promisingly, it has petered out a bit. I'm struggling through my current read, and it's probably the book and not me, but still I'm determined to finish it. I've got some fashion non-fiction lined up after this. I'm afraid I haven't been making anything. There was the intention, though, to make a cake last weekend, but then it turned out the self raising flour I needed had long passed its BB date! xxx

    1. Hope you enjoy the Bee!
Perhaps you need to switch books, I always think life is too short to trudge through a book you're not enjoying.
I didn't think to check the BB date on my flour, it didn't cross my mind to do so - oops! Everything has tasted fine :)

  8. I love this theme! The Stranger Diaries sounds really good. I have two other David Levithan books on my shelves, Are We There Yet? and The Lover's Dictionary, but I'll have to check this one out too!

    1. I don't usually watch a complete series but I'm determined to this time round!
Thanks, they're my only pair of 'big' earrings, and they're not even that big, but perfect for a pirate :)
