My Weekend #01

Monday, January 08, 2018

It was my wish at the beginning of the year to avoid that Sunday night feeling of a weekend wasted. My goal was to have a plan in place for the coming weekend by each Friday evening.

This weekend the plan was to plant our small Christmas tree in the wood. We chose a nice spot and popped it in the ground. Sadly it didn't have much of a root ball, so it might not survive but it's got two choices.

Andy then chopped some wood, which I loaded into the truck, while we chatted away, enjoying being outside. I love spending our time in the wood, I really hope our little tree survives.

A lesser plan was to go to the supermarket, get rid of the glass recycling, and pick up some flowers for the lounge. With all the decorations taken down and packed away for another year, it looked so bare. I was able to use some greenery from a bouquet Andy bought for me just before Christmas (why does the greenery always last so much longer), and I filled two vases with vibrant yellow roses and purple carnations. They're no substitute for a 7ft Christmas tree but they do look cheerful.

I definitely didn't get that wasted weekend feeling on Sunday evening. The whole weekend I pottered about, getting lots of household chores done, returning the house to normality after Christmas, ticking things off my to-do list. I wrote our meal plan for the week, flipping through recipe books for a new dish to try - Brazilian Style Fish Stew - and placed a grocery order. I spent a lovely hour in the greenhouse sorting out some hanging baskets and container pots. I helped Andy cook roast pheasant with all the trimmings - because we haven't eaten enough recently! And I found time to sit and read for a while, and do some work. We also made a hefty dent in The Soprano's boxset.

How was your weekend?

  1. That was a weekend well spent! On Saturday, we took down are decorations and put them and our tree (a fake one) away. Then we went to a local charity shop and had coffee and cake at their café. On Sunday, we went to a big flea market, and I made photographs for my next post. So, my weekend was well spent too! xxx

    1. I love a weekend of 'doing'. I'm sure I've forgotten a lot of the lovely things I spent my weekends doing last year, so I this will help me remember when I look back.

  2. Thank you for your comment on my books post :)

That was a good weekend! I think this is a brilliant goal for the year, I often have that wasted weekend feeling too and I love the idea of making a conscious effort to plan and do things to avoid that. It's no so easy at the moment, we've been renovating a house for the last 6 months so I don't get proper weekends at the moment, but once we've moved in I may join you in your good weekend endeavours!

    1. You're welcome.

My plan is to write a weekly post so I can look back at the end of the year and see what I got up to. I'd love you to join in! Good luck with the renovations.

  3. It's so easy to let the weekend pass without doing much, isn't it? I love your idea of planting out your Christmas tree, you'll be able to decorate it in the woods next year if it lives. Eleanor went back to uni at the weekend so our weekend was taken up with that, shopping on Saturday for things she needed to take back with her and then packing and getting her back on Sunday.

    1. I hope it lives. The root ball didn't look encouraging but it's got a 50% chance. I took a photo of us with the tree and, if it does survive, I'd like to take one each year :)
It sounds like you had a busy weekend, but they're nice aren't they? I love the feeling of having achieved something come Sunday evening.

  4. Oh that sounds like a wonderful weekend Hazel, especially the tree planting and greenhouse pottering! I spent the weekend ticking things off my blog to do list as it was a rainy one here. It was very productive which felt amazing!

    1. I love a productive weekend. I don't mind having a lazy weekend once in a while, but for the most part I want to make the most of them. Ticking things off a to-do list is one of my favourite things, I write far too many lists!
      Thanks for stopping by

  5. We are trying to spend our weekends better as well. Last weekend, we blitz cleaned the whole house, meal planned and went for a walk. This weekend, I have been for a walk with my Mum and Dad, done a shop and will be going to a charity evening this pm - just need to blog it all as well!
