My Weekend #02 & My Word of 2018

Monday, January 15, 2018

It was my wish at the beginning of the year to avoid that Sunday night feeling of a weekend wasted. My goal was to have a plan in place for the coming weekend by each Friday evening.

Talk about falling at the first second hurdle.

I did very little this weekend. I was feeling really unwell and spent most of my time either in bed or horizontal on the sofa. And I got annoyed - as I always do when I'm ill - at sitting around doing nothing, despite the fact I had the energy to do very little.

We'd planned to have supper with my brother and his family on Saturday night, and then get back into the wood on Sunday to chop some more wood. Neither of these things happened.

In an effort to assuage my annoyance I decided to make a list of all the things I'm looking forward to in the year ahead. You know I like a list, and as I've declared that 2018 will be a positive and lovely year, the list will help me to see how it will come to pass.

2018 will be a lovely year because;

Andy and I will have an early break at The Victoria, Holkham. Andy's parents gave this to us as a Christmas gift and I couldn't be more excited. Of all the things I want in life the most important is more time with my husband.

We'll also go on holiday to Guernsey, not that it's booked but it is happening.

I'll have a spa day with my best friend in February.

We'll make our monthly lunch club happen at intervals that actually resemble monthly!

I'll take part in all of the #PhotoADay days for the year and actually blog about them.

I'll read in the sunshine, I'll read under a blanket with a cat on my lap.

I'll have a full year of 1 Second Everyday clips.

I'll make progress on DIY projects. I've made a list of what I'll do in order. I'm raring to go... as soon as I feel better.

I'll make more time to spend with family and friends.

When Andy disappears into harvest I'll plan days out either wandering a beach alone, or going to fayres and festivals with friends. I'll eat out, have breakfast in bed, and drink hot tea outside with a warm breeze on my skin.

I'll learn how to make pasta from scratch.

And I'll complete everything on my seasonal to-do lists, and tick off everything on my resolutions list. Because my word of 2018 is Thrive.

Thrive.

To grow or develop well or vigorously.

To continue to examine and refine, to make little changes to live a better life. To not waste a day, a thought, or a single ounce of energy on the things I can't control.

To see the positives, enjoy the little things, live for today, plan for tomorrow, and be as happy and content as I can be.

Yup, 2018 is going to be awesome.

What would your word be? Did you have a good weekend?

  1. What a great word for the year. I think making this list counts as accomplishing something this weekend, even if it's not what you wanted to do. And I hope you are feeling better by now! Your #felinegood was genius, by the way (sorry, forgot to comment on the day).

    1. I guess it does count but it doesn't feel like a huge achievement. I am feeling a little better now thank you.

  2. Thrive, I like that. Yes, it was an excellent weekend for me. I got a room sorted out that's been at least a year in limbo (my bad) and felt really happy about it

  3. I think you can be forgiven for taking it easy this weekend, you can't expect to achieve very much if you're feeling unwell. Looking after yourself and being kind to yourself counts as doing something positive anyway.

    1. I guess so. I'm guilty of always telling others to relax, to take care, but I find it hard to do it myself. I get restless, even when I feel dreadful. But I do know that taking it easy was the right thing.
      Thanks Jo.

  4. I'm sorry to hear you've not been feeling well, Hazel. Thrive is a wonderful word, full of life and possibilities. Judging from your lists, you are well on your way to a well-spent year. I should take your example, really, as I haven't got much planned and am taking each day as it comes. xxx

    1. Writing a list spurs me on to do things, if I didn't write so many lists I don't think I'd ever get anything done, I'd just wander around in my own little bubble, doing whatever came to mind, which would be not much more than reading, playing with the cats, and never leaving the farm :)
You seem to fill your time well without a list, you're always out and about

  5. Thrive is a brilliant word for the year and I like your thinking for the goals... this is how I try to live, though it's been more challenging lately with so much to do and not enough time or energy! I think if I was going to pick a word for this year it would be 'live' (as opposed to just existing!) - to enjoy life again, to get out, go for walks, get away for a weekend of two and see and do things... so much of my free time goes into renovation at the moment, I'm just desperate to get my free time back to do what I want to do, not what I need to do! We have got a few things booked for the next couple of months, but they all come with a side order of guilt that it we're doing other things at the weekends, we're delaying the getting the house finished and moving into it but never mind, I do like to take opportunities whilst they are there and the house will get done eventually!

What a shame your weekend plan hit a stumbling block so early in the year - hope you're feeling better now and ready for the next weekend!

You already have a lot to look forward to this year!

I really like the 1 second a day idea but couldn't get to grips with the app and doing it on my phone! I do, however, do the 365 project and make a video at the end of each year of my photo-a-day which is kind of the same thing!

I'm also intending to do photo an hour every month this year, but we'll see how that goes! I keep missing the note that says when the date is and not realising it's happening (or my days are just too boring, working at the house) but I'm ready and willing for this Saturday, though it will be a boring kind of day!

    1. It's absolutely fine, and I think necessary to take time out from renovating - anything that takes that much time and energy on top of work and everything else that life entails will require time off. You need to regroup, relax, and recharge once in a while - it's essential. When we moved in we had months of DIY and after a while I just couldn't face it, I didn't do anything for months after that. It would've been better to take time out than keep plodding on a hit a wall.

I'm obsessed with the 1 Second Everyday app, I started in Feb last year and love how it captures those special little moments that I'd probably forget otherwise. Your 365 Project and video is much the same.

I take part in Photo An Hour even if I've got a dull or ordinary day planned, I take part on Instagram too and if nothing else it brightens my day a little. And I like to think that even an ordinary day is worth documenting, imagine looking back in 30, 40, 50 years time and seeing how life has changed - or not!! :)

  8. Thrive is a great focus word, mine is nurture. I think we all in blogland are heading towards caring for ourselves a bit more this year from what I have read, and there's nothing wrong with it!

    1. Nothing wrong with it at all, if we all did it a bit more I think the world would be a better place

  9. I had a really busy, but really good weekend. Managed to fit in cleaning the house, a family walk, blogging up a storm, a Sunday lunch and a lot of TV and snoozing!
