On the brink of harvest

I like summer and have some exciting plans for the coming months that I'm really looking forward to, but I do feel a pang of sadness when spring draws to an end, knowing that I will see so little of Andy in the coming months, as he works long days, everyday, during harvest.
It's also an exciting time of year, the countryside becomes a hive of activity, there's a hum of machinery in the air and after dark, when the fields are normally cloaked in black, they come alive with the lights of tractors and combines.
Looking out of the window I can see them working all around. I feel immensely proud of Andy, and all farmers, at this time of year. It's the result of many months of hard work. Work that, once harvest is over, immediately starts all over again.
I take every opportunity to join Andy in his tractor cab, but when left to my own devices I like to keep myself busy more than at any other time of year. In stark contrast to the end of spring when I like to keep my evenings and weekends free to make the most of any downtime Andy has.
Spring turned out to be wonderfully sociable this year. As lovely as that was, it can make it harder when harvest gets underway. I wouldn't change a moment of it, I have some lovely memories, but I soon get used to having him around more often. When he's gone I feel it more keenly.

I always think of you both when I see wheat! Like that walk last week! I hope you don't feel too lonely! I won't see CBC for the whole of August as he is half way across the world so I feel your pain!!x
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say I feel lonely, I'm good at being alone, but I do miss him, and the day to day interactions. The detail of daily life, the little things.
DeleteA month is a long time, you'll have to make some exciting plans to help it pass quicker. and you can write to each other, that would be so lovely!

DeleteThat photograph of the wheatfield is so lovely, it really sums up summer for me, although for you it will be the busiest time of the year. I have a friend whose partner farms in Holland and I understand it can be lonely, even if it that is not really the correct word. It's a good thing that you're good at being alone. xxx
ReplyDeleteThe wheat and barley fields do look their best in the weeks before they're harvested, I love how they sway in the wind, it's like watching the sea.
DeleteAs a townie struggling to maintain my garden I can't get my head around how hard work it must be to be a farmer. I'm glad you managed quality time together in Spring. Harvest must be so hard for you both. xxx
ReplyDeleteHe works ridiculously hard all year round, all farmers do. I don't know how he finds the energy.
DeleteIt's a way of life, I do miss him but I also get used to it on a daily basis, I just get on with things. There are moments though when I wish he could just come home for a few hours. Or even just ten minutes.
