The Day I Got Stuff Done

Tuesday, April 06, 2021

March 20th, Photo An Hour day. I woke up with a plan of having a ‘doing day’, a day of getting stuff done but with no particular plan. I’d hoped the weather would be nice so I could get out into the garden and I’m very pleased to say that it obliged. I had housework to do (it’s never ending isn’t it) but I always find it easy to push housework to the bottom of the to-do list, fitting it in around other more enjoyable things.

6am. Normal daily routine was underway. Kettle on, washing in the machine, with Socks trying to eat his food before it was all out of the packet.

7am. Spent a lovely hour with the husband before he went off to work. Wanted to make the bed but…

8am. Washing was on the line. Time for some yoga.

9am. Princess and the Pea? Another bed that wasn't made for a while...

10am. Post Office trip. I saved up a bundle of parcels to keep trips to a minimum.

11am. Yeah, I had all the good jobs to do. My car boot was full, this was the first trip to the bottle bank since March last year!

12pm. So I got home from recycling the glass, kicked my shoes off, clicked the kettle on, and saw the letters I'd intended to post that morning...

1pm. I usually have lunch a bit earlier but I didn’t know if Husband was coming home or not. He turned up as I was half way through the bowl. I had a strong suspicion that the soup and apple would be followed by a heavily buttered hot cross bun. I was right.

2pm. Time for some greenhouse pottering.

3pm. Repotted.

4pm. Tea and frogging an ancient knitting project, made more challenging by the fact that it was knitted with the wool doubled up, it kept getting tangled and I gave up. I won’t be defeated though, I intend to engage the services of my Mother to roll one ball as I roll the other, surely that will be easier?

At this point I stopped taking photos, at 5pm I was collecting wood for the fire from the shed, and all that followed was cooking our evening  meal and the watching of a few more episodes of The West Wing, before a soak in the bath and reading in bed.

Thanks to Louisa for hosting.

    1. It is lovely and soft, and once it's deconstructed and knitted into something else it'll be equally as soft :)

  2. Housework is neverending, it's true. I try to box it up into just one day a week and dam it in to stop it leaking out into the rest of it. Of course washing up, washing clothes and cleaning up the kitchen are pretty much daily but I'm bloody not going to pick up that hoover more than once a week. I don't want my lovely time contaminated with such ghastly chores. My one day a week housework blitz is a bit of chaos but FUCKING HELL I will not be dictated to by chores spilling into every day. So aside from exercise and barking at anyone who dares to interrupt my housework day (usually with actual work, work) then I keep my head down and keep on going. Excellent for a calorie burn day of raised but not spiked heartrate.
I think I went on a rant there.

    1. All rants welcome :)
I know it makes sense to do as much as you can in one day and then leave it for a week but I get to midday and I've had enough! Living with two cats and a grubby husband means the hoover comes out way more than once a week sadly, but I have a snazzy new one that I'm enjoying using at the moment (it'll wane, don't worry!), I hate dusting as the results last about 3 minutes, but not as much as I detest cleaning the oven...

  3. I always tend to push housework to the bottom of the to-do-list as well. Jos used to do the majority of it when I was still working full-time, but now I'm working less I need to pull my weight! It was OK in those 4 cat-free weeks, but then we had to go and adopt a new one who's still young and playful and hey presto, here are the dust and cat hair bunnies again! Working in the garden is so much more enjoyable, isn't it? Your Heuchera is looking great. I've got the same somewhere in the garden, not looking its best ... That soup does look delicious and the mere thought of a hot cross bun is making me salivate! Yummy! xxx

    1. But a new cat is more than worth it! I always - ALWAYS - get muddy paw prints on my fresh bedding within hours of the sheets being changed, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
Being in the garden is never a chore, I enjoy every minute of it. The Heuchera had been sheltered in the greenhouse and was looking really lovely but since it's been outside it's been blown about and snowed on, so it's looking a little sorry for itself! I'm sure it will perk up when the sun comes out - as we all do :)
I've eaten way too many hot cross buns recently (not sorry)

  4. Sophie's rant made me laugh! I agree with her though! I don't have a dedicated day but I do things when I need to as I do not want my life to be ruled by cleaning.
You did really well- so much achieved! I am impressed!
Would you disown me if I confessed to never having cleaned the oven?
    The grey wool looks lovely!xx

    1. Me neither, cleaning is so dull.
Your confession just makes me like you more, I put off this task again and again, to the point where I'm thinking of getting it professionally cleaned (anything not to have to do it myself!!).
I'm not sure what they grey wool will be but it's so soft, it deserves to be used.

  5. Isn't that always the case, you leave out the letters that need posting so that you don't forget them when you leave the house and there they still are when you return. I always enjoy seeing your cats in your posts.

    1. The problem is I do it regularly, nobody ever gets a birthday card on time!
The cats always feature highly in Photo An Hour posts, because they spend most of their day getting under my feet (not that I would have it any other way, of course).

  6. Your washing was on the line before I even dragged myself out of bed! I'm very impressed with all you got done. Ugh, housework. I sometimes leave it in the secret hope that Jan will pick up the slack but other than emptying the dishwasher and occasionally hanging some washing if I previously ran they machine he very rarely does. Sometimes I think he working extra late on purpose so he had an excuse for ignoring the mess!

    1. We're early risers in this house :)
Have you tried asking him to help you? Maybe he just doesn't see that things need doing, or you could give him something to be responsible for - emptying and putting the bins out, vacuuming whilst you clean ...?
