Week 17, Wearing It All and Stuff

Friday, July 10, 2020

Well week 17 of lockdown, week 1 of Wearing It All 2020, didn’t look much like summer at all did it? I had envisioned lots of dresses and vest tops, sandals and sunglasses. Instead I got jumpers and jeans. The one day I did wear a short sleeved top it was soon covered with a sweatshirt. It's not that I dislike a jeans and jumper outfit, far from it, it's just not what I was expecting, it's July after all.

I hope the weather improves, I have far more summer clothes in my wardrobe than anything else, which seems daft for someone living in the UK, with our unpredictable and often disappointing weather, I’ve been hoodwinked by the hot summers we’ve had in recent years.

Why is it that my outfit posts so often end up being about the weather?

Not only has it been cooler it’s been windy too. And the wind makes taking outfit shots more difficult as you can see in the first and last photo of the week, I gave up trying to take a shot without hair covering my face on day 7. This was the best of them, in the worst my face was completely covered by my hair. Once again I forgot that windy days and lip gloss simply doesn’t mix and ended up with hair stuck to my mouth more than once. Irritating.

Wearing It All will help with my mend pile, I need to do some visible mending on a few pairs of jeans before I can wear them. But I need the sun to shine as I’m itching to get my summer dresses out. My favourite kind of outfit is one that doesn’t require layers.

I haven’t been far this week. Work is still busy enough to keep my occupied for most of the day. In the quieter moments I’m just pottering about, keeping the house clean and tidy, planning meals, and doing laundry. On Saturday Andy and I spent some time pulling wild oats out of a seed barley crop, it was warm but cloudy and not too hot. It's was a very satisfying way to spend time. We have our best conversations whilst outside together like this, or on long car journeys, probably because we have few other distractions.

We went for a walk on Sunday and came across a plot set aside for winter bird feed. It was full of wild flowers and butterflies. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many butterflies in one place before, apart from the butterfly house I visited on holiday in Wales as a teenager, but that doesn’t really count.

Almost all of the butterflies were Small Whites (which is a rather boring name for such pretty little things), I only saw one other but it was too fleeting for me to identify.

I tried to capture them in a photograph but it doesn’t do it justice. With all of them fluttering about I felt like a princess in a Disney movie, albeit one wearing skinny jeans and ankle boots.

  1. I have been wearing holiday clothes even during this last cold spell. Some things I had found to hot to wear on holiday have turned out to be ok for here and my denim shorts have had the most wear ever as I put them on for my daily walk and change when I get home. 2 dresses I bought last year for work have not been worn at all and I realised I should probably not buy 'for work' any more as its casual dress at the office anyway and I am unlikely to be there until we head into Autumn so these kind of pieces I might sell on eBay as not earning their keep any more :)

    1. I've been selecting items for ebay as I go through Wearing It All, it helps to identify all the bits and pieces that I no longer wear. I have a tendency to hang onto things 'just in case', but I don't have the wardrobe space for things I no longer need, and what's the point in hanging on to them?
How nice to be wearing holiday clothes :)

  2. I have been wearing summery things anyway, just perhaps with a cardie or leggings!
I really like your outfits! You have such a chic style! I always love seeing your outfits! Nice to hear you have great conversations picking wild oats with Andy (rather than sowing, ha ha!!)

    1. Thank you, that's really kind.
I don't have any leggings to wear under dresses or skirts, so yesterday I wore skinny jeans under a midi dress instead.
Ha ha! I made a similar joke when Andy said he was pulling wild oats, I replied 'just don't be sewing them!' :)

  3. July has been a bit of a disappointment so far, hasn't it? When we were expecting end of June's mini heatwave, I'd ironed all my light cotton Summer stuff, which is now hanging ready and looking at me reproachfully. I have been tempted to get out my long-sleeved frocks again, but so far I've resisted and layered up. I love butterflies and I was amazed to see several species I'd never seen in our garden before. Normally it's mainly Small Whites. xxx

    1. It's been a good year for butterflies, they seems to be everywhere in greater numbers.
The sun is starting to reappear, I just hope it sticks around for a while. Rain and grey skies are such a disappointment in the summer months.

  4. I love your butterfly picture and your round-up of outfits.
Most of my clothes are year-round ones these days, I only have a handful of items that are specifically seasonal although I've spent today in a bikini and shorts, long may it last! xxx

    1. Hurrah for the sunshine!
I like having seasonal clothes, light dresses for the summer and chunky knits for the winter, it feels like something to look forward to as the weather changes. I always enjoy getting my summer clothes out of storage, even it I don't get to wear them as much as I'd like.

  5. I'm starting to think that the warm spring we had was our summer this year, it really isn't T-shirt weather at the moment, is it. In fact, I have the heating on most days at the moment, madness. Fingers crossed that we have some better weather on the way.

  6. It's driving me mad at the moment, layering up then taking them all off when it's briefly hot then piling layers back on again...
I spy a (possibly) gatekeeper in the bottom right of your picture. I love watching butterflies in action, just as long as they don't fly near my face xx

    1. I just wish the weather would do what it's supposed to be doing!
I think you're right about it being a Gatekeeper - the only one among all those Small Whites :)
It was lovely to see so many all in one place, and they were too interested in the flowers to bother about me (I don't like them around my face either).
