Eco Swaps #3

Another plastic free swap I've made in recent months is toothpaste. Back in June I purchased Georganics Natural Toothpaste from Peace With The Wild.
I've always been a little skeptical about natural toothpastes but the increasing desire to reduce plastic in our household was the push I needed to give it a try.
It smells lovely, very minty. The flavour however leaves something to be desired. After forty odd years of that minty fresh feeling regular toothpaste gives, this took some getting used to.
The texture is harder and drier than normal toothpaste, and it's got a warm, bitter taste. It doesn't foam either, so you can see why it took some time to adjust.
I'm going to stick to non plastic packaged toothpastes but I'd like to try other alternatives, I miss the minty taste, and the fresh feeling the mint gave to my mouth after brushing.
Up next on my list to try are the Peace With The Wild Toothpaste Tablets. I'm hoping these will be a bit closer to the mark.
Any recommendations for plastic free toothpastes?

I really like those denttabs you're trying next, they've been my favourite of the few plastic free toothpastes I've tried (though not very minty, you may be disappointed again on that aspect!) I haven't tried any in paste form, but currently have some orange flavoured georganics tabs that fizz! The orange flavour was tricky at first but I've got used to it now and don't dislike them, but I want to switch back to the ones from Peace with the Wild when I run out of orange ones.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to hear you like the tabs. I suppose I'll just have to get used to the not having the minty aspect, it might take some time after 40 years of Colgate

I'm not a fan of conventional minty toothpastes - they're always so sweet. I tend to stock up on ayurvedic toothpaste in India as its unsweetened. In a bid to reduce our waste we've been using Truth Paste since May, both the peppermint & wintergreen and fennel varieties are really good. xxx
ReplyDeleteI've heard of Truthpaste, it may well go on my list of products to try. Thanks.

I seem to remember trying a tooth powder instead of toothpaste years ago and I just didn't like how it left my mouth feeling afterwards, though I suppose you'd get used to just about anything in time. There's so much choice these days though so trying different products is the way to go.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely something I'm willing to persevere with.

I love the idea, but I'm just not sure my super sensitive teeth would agree with anything but the special toothpaste prescribed by my dentist ... I wouldn't mind it not having a minty taste, though. xxx
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure these would be good for sensitive teeth. I miss the minty taste, I think it's because I associate the mint with feeling fresh.

I have been struggling with this very same one as you. I've tried the Geororganics Charcoal one which is quite good but I miss the foaming and it's more of a faff to take the lid off, try to scrape a bit of the stuff onto the toothpaste and try to clean it off without wasting it. We then tried Truthpaste. CBC likes it but I'm not so keen. It's fairly minty. I bought some Toothtabs from the Ecofair recently and they do them at the Refill room. They are ok but not so foamy. They are more minty though I really do miss proper toothpaste-
ReplyDeleteMy Mum gave us some Fluoride free Tooth powder she bought from France. Haven't tried it yet!
It is the mint I miss the most. I've got used to the non foaming aspect, and the weird feeling in my mouth after brushing, but I think it's worth trying some others to see if there is something I like more. I've often wondered why you can't get normal toothpaste in a glass jar?
