Making Pom Pom Wreaths

Tuesday, August 28, 2018

Making pom pom wreaths has become a bit of an obsession recently. I'm spending far too much time turning balls of wool into little fluffy spheres and making them into one big soft circle!

They're so easy to do. I use pom pom makers. I ordered mine from Amazon but you can pick them up in other places too. If I didn't have these, I'd be using the old two pieces of cardboard method and I can guarantee that the obsession wouldn't have taken hold if I was doing it that way. It would take far too long.

I purchased some wire rings to use as a base. I started with 10" and have since used 14", 12" and 8" too. My very first wreath was made using a simple ring of cardboard. If I were to do that again I'd wrap the whole thing in wool, ribbon or fabric before tying on the pom poms, just to make it a little prettier.

I make a large selection of pom poms first and when I have what I think is enough, I begin tying them onto the ring. Generally I like to have an odd number of the largest size, so that it doesn't look too symmetrical, but this one didn't work out that way.

I don't like them to be too neat and precise so when I space them out I make the spacing random. I tie them on until all the space is filled, making more if I need to.

Then I step back and gaze at it a while. Sometimes I add another pom pom here or there, sometimes I remove one or two and make alternatives. This goes on until I'm happy with the end result.

And then I start all over again...

So I can look back at these after they're sold and in their new homes, here are all the wreaths I've made so far.

They all have names. My friend used to name each piece of furniture she restored and sold. When I started making these I knew that she'd love them so I named them all in her honour.

  1. They're fabulous. I remember making pompoms as a child with two pieces of cardboard, it seemed to take forever. I think Dasher and Dancer are my favourites.

    1. Thank you, I like those ones too. The green is very festive.
The old method was very time consuming, I'm so glad someone designed the pom pom maker!

  2. I quite understand pom-pom making can be addictive, in fact, I was tempted the other day when I saw a pom-pom maker in a haberdashery shop! Not sure I would be able to make such lovely ones a yours, though. I love how you've given the wreaths names too! xxx

    1. I've got my sister in law and one of my friends completely addicted! I'd advise caution when deciding to purchase pom pom makers, it can seriously eat into your free time!

  3. They're so pretty!
I have small pompom makers but mine always seem to lose bits. They never did that when I used the old cardboard circle method as a kid! I wonder if I'm using the wrong kind of wool?

    1. It's not a problem I've had so far. Most wool has been fine. Anything too thick doen't work very well but even then all the bits stay in place. Sorry I can't offer any help.

  5. Oh they are BEAUTIFUL Hazel!!! I remember the utter joy I had when I first used my Pompom makers (I bought them in Petworth when I stayed with my friend Ellie. I wanted to make a pompom collar like Alex Odd Socks and Pretty frocks did. I made a few Pompom scarves for presents that year!
My favourites are Blythe and Buzz! The colour combos work so well! Where are you going to sell them? Bravo to you!Xx

    1. Thanks Kezzie! I remember the pom pom collars you speak of, I've been pondering making something similar :)

I'm going to sell them at a few small scale craft fayres that I've organised at my local hospital with my Mum and a friend. The money will be split between the Radiotherapy dept, and Petals (counseling for baby loss). We've got one in September, October and November. It's going to be a busy few months!

    1. Thank you! I like Dolly to but then I have so many favourites it'll be hard to part with them. I like the random coloured ones, they make me smile.

  7. Gorgeous! I've never really attempted pompoms as they don't usually suit my style. These are great, though; I can't even pick a favourite. I think I like the ones with multicolored pompoms best. Hope they raise lots of money.
