Impulse Purchases

Saturday, February 06, 2021

Part of my plan to tackle impulse purchases for my Year of Less is to write down anything I think about buying and waiting before making a purchase.

So far this year I've not purchased a few things.

Everything I thought about buying in January would've been an online purchase due to being in lockdown which makes shopping easier to resist. I'm still not sure how I'm going to deal with impulse purchases when standing in a shop but for now, with essential shops still shut, this approach seems to be working.

1. Book

There was a reference book I wanted to read but the library was shut, I really didn't want to buy another book and then inspiration struck - an audio book. I checked the library app (thanks for the tip Betty) but the book I wanted wasn't available so I joined Audible for a month and downloaded it. Yes, I parted with some cash, but saving money isn't the goal, consuming less is the aim and a digital copy creates no clutter.

I don't think I'll ever abandon the printed page entirely, I love the feel (and smell) of books, but a few audio books won't do me any harm.

2. Phone chargers

Once upon a time we had three phone chargers with long cords, only one now works and it lives in the lounge for both of us to use. I wanted one by the bed so I could charge my phone and scroll. After some thought I realised I could use my power banks instead of letting them sit in a drawer largely unused. Now I keep them on my desk so they're not out of sight, out of mind. I've got into the habit of keeping them charged. Problem solved and no purchase necessary.

3. Pens

We used to have loads of pens floating about the place but we seem to be down to the last few. I decided a good quality refillable pen would be an eco friendly alternative to the stockpile of plastic disposable pens we've been using. When I started looking online I realised that if I was going to buy a pen to use long term I'd need to try it first, some pens just don't feel right in your hand do they? Others don't write nicely. I decided that I'd spend a while in WHSmith after lockdown. I haven't been yet obviously but it's something I am weirdly rather looking forward to. At some point I will make a purchase but it'll be one that lasts, until then I'm fiercely guarding my one remaining Biro.

4. Notebook

I wanted a notebook for a specific purpose. I had a very clear idea of the qualities it needed to have. I found one on the Paperchase website that ticked all the boxes but I stuck to my rule and waited a while to see if I still felt the need to buy it. I have plenty of unused notebooks, and having waited a while I decided to stop being so pernickety and just use one of those.

5. 2021 Diary

I buy a diary every year and write in it daily for a few weeks, sometimes into February or early March if I'm lucky, and then it's forgotten. I have a calendar to write appointments, birthdays, to keep track of deadlines and hours worked, and this gets used daily, all year round. But my diary just gets ignored, so for the first time in many years I decided not to buy one. I'm using last years as a notepad so it doesn't go to waste.

This wait-and-see system has stopped a few unnecessary items from entering our home, and I've saved approximately £50.00. Yes I'll probably spend some of that on a new 'forever pen' but in terms of using what I have, and limiting purchases I think I can call it a win. I just need to keep it up for the next 11 months, by which time I'm hoping it'll be second nature and impulse purchases will be a thing of the past.

  1. I think that's actually a great idea! I often find that when I'm dithering about a purchase and leave it behind, I rarely go back for it, so it definitely works. Also, during the first lockdown, when we were unable to go out and buy things on a whim, I was surprised at what I could find that we already owned and repurposed those. One problem, it doesn't seem to work with clothes so much :-) xxx

    1. I have made purchases this year but I think they're ones that I genuinely needed. I think when the shops open again I just need to visit less often - I have no self control in shops! That said, lockdown has taught me, like you, that I own what I need already. But, yes, clothes are another subject altogether!

  2. I'm all about the considered purchases (she says after buying four garments on ebay at the weekend) - I bought Jon the cult Lamy Safari fountain pen for Xmas - it can be easily converted to use ink as opposed to cartridges to save waste and they're really lovely to write with. xxx

    1. I bet you use and love all four purchases though. And I think you're much better than me at selling on the things you no longer wear.
That's exactly the sort of pen I'm after, I think a good pen can make your handwriting look nicer too, and I need all the help I can get, I write so rarely these days (other than to-do lists) that my penmanship has declined somewhat!

  3. I'm glad you tried the library app, I mostly use it for magazines (Country Living). I haven't done any impulse buying but I did need new frying pan (son 1 had used it on such high heat last year it had a bit bump in the middle lol!) some draft excluder for the front door and a new potato peeler... I always ask myself how many uses I will get from something to justif the expense :)

    1. I do like a bit of Country Living! I can see it as being something I can use for magazines or cookbooks.
I need a new frying pan too, ours is no longer flat on the bottom either. And a large saucepan, the handle fell off and can't be repaired. When it's something I need I'll look around and find a bargain or a good deal, but when it comes to impulse purchases that goes out the window! But, by realising these traits I can hopefully make improvements.

  4. I never really thought about pens but yes there must be billions in landfill. The rate at which they disappear is alarming. I was only thinking the other day about the pens they used to have on chains in banks. I fear I'd only lose a nice re-usable one in the same way as all the rest, somewhere, mysteriously. xx

    1. I remember those! Didn't they get replaced with tiny disposable ones?
I do worry that I'd lose a good pen but as long as I didn't leave the house with it, I'm hoping it won't get lost. I have found some bamboo ones that I might use as bag pens :)

  5. Well done for all these avoided purchases! I had a lovely diary last year which CBC bought me but it didn't get used! I have SO many notepads lying around which I am so resistant to using! It's silly. Most of them, in fact all, have been presents.
I have a beautiful reusable pen from Cross (posh brand) which I was bought as a leaving present from the luthiers at the Royal Academy of music 16 years ago which I haven't lost but it came out its case recently and something has gone wrong with the mechanism which I'm a bit annoyed about.
CBC bought refillable whiteboard pens for school. It's worth finding out if any of your local schools (well, as local as you get in the countryside!) do the Terracycle recycling scheme with pens- I have saved all my used pens for my little sister as she wanted to get registered to do it with her school.

    1. I love diaries and notebooks but I just don't seem to use them. I have really lovely hardback, fabric covered notebooks that I bought for work, but they sit on the bookshelf and I use a ratty old notebook from Tesco that Andy left in the lounge instead, having been in his tractor it's a bit grubby. It's so silly it makes me chuckle.
What a shame your pen no longer works, is it worth getting in touch with the brand to see if they can look at it?
I like the Terracycle idea, I take (or used to before lockdown) a lot of bits and pieces to a terracycle collection point at a local charity shop. I hadn't thought about taking pens, but they seem to accept just about everything! I can't wait for the shop to open again so I can refill my washing up liquid bottles. Oh for lockdown to be over!!
