I do wear it
Thursday, February 11, 2021I spent a while reading some of my old blog posts, do you ever do this? I came across a post, written in 2016 about things I thought I couldn't wear. Since then I've tried some of the combinations with varying degrees of success.
I talked about how I couldn't do ankle boots and bare legs, I still can't, I feel a complete idiot. And wearing tights and open toe shoes has never happened in public. I did wear this combination at a wedding dress fitting once, but that really doesn't count (it does give me the opportunity to share a wedding dress photo though - never like to miss an opportunity, even 6 years on).
I mentioned wearing shirts under jumpers, at the time I couldn't make it work but I've obviously figured it out as it's something I do regularly now.
Head scarves still baffle me (I can't get them to stay on), but they are something I'd like to master. I did try neck scarves, and although I love this look on others, I didn't love it on me. I think perhaps the fabric was too stiff and that made it feel uncomfortable.
Others things are tights over shorts, coats worn over shoulders, slouchy beanie hats or berets worn on the back of your head (how do they stay on?), shirts knotted at the waist, and shirts buttoned all the way up. Although I've done the last two more than once since writing my original post, and they were things I though I'd never do.
It just goes to show we never really stop experimenting - and Yay for that!

I often read my own old blog posts, and marvel at what was and how I've changed. I find myself wearing things I wouldn't even have considered, say, a couple of years ago. Our styles shift and change all the time, I think. And isn't experimenting fun? xxx
ReplyDeleteso. much. fun.

It's good to keep challenging ourselves sartorially and not stagnating. You certainly wear a shirt under a jumper well.
ReplyDeleteI do love a midi dress with ankle boots and bare legs but a lot of the things you mention seem like the kind of strange things you see on fashion blogs that are worn for show like shoulder coats and weirdly angled berets.
I used to have a queue of women at festivals asking me to tie their head scarves, I can do it for other people and they stay put all day but on myself I can't get it right! x
I think I might be able to do a midi dress with ankle boots, definitely a maxi. And I love midis and maxis with trainers.
DeleteCoats and hats should be worn properly, none of this balancing nonsense :)
I'm not beaten by head scarves yet, I'm going to keep trying!

Im an expert on coats over shoulders and also jumpers slung over shoulders as they do accessorize nicely! headscarves yes, unwashed hair helps! I love that picture of the wedding dress with socks - worth framing I think :) I can't do shirts all buttoned up either it just looks too military to me and I am with you on ankle boots with that great expanse of leg exposed- no matter how colourful the tights I just cant do it - I have a pair of brand new leather ankle boots from 3 years ago and they only come out with a maxi skirt. One thing I won't do is elasticated waiste bands!
ReplyDeleteI always feel like coats and jumpers are going to slide off my shoulders. I can do ankle boots with tights (mostly black boots with black tights), but with bare legs it just doesn't work for me.
DeleteElasticated waistbands make me think of children and old ladies :D

You rock a shirt and jumper! I puzzle over headscarves and neckscarves. They make me look like I tried to either look like Rambo or a giant present embellishment. (neither of which is my aim).
ReplyDeleteSocks and boots with dresses. I couldn't bare to ditch the socks - bare feet in shoes does make me a bit nervous. Even in sandals - probably as I've cut my feet up several times in ill fitting footwear.
Any kind of hat wearing without looking like a total idiot is still beyond me. I just jam one on and brace myself for the horrendous look but at least it's warm.
I can't wear any kind of below the knee, above the foot trouser. I look abominable. -
There is an art to scarves that not all of us possess, I'm beginning to think it can't be learned.
DeleteYou rock the boots and dress look, you are the Queen of dresses with ankle boots! I do like an ankle grazing trousers though and wear it sockless. I prefer shoes without socks, but I do think heeled sandals can look cute with the right socks.
I struggle with hats too and only wear them for warmth, I think hair length has something to do with it. When my hair was bobbed hats seemed to look better, perhaps it's all about proportion?

I agree that you are CONQUERING the wearing of a jumper over a shirt- you do it so nicely! I agree about the ankle boot thing- I do find it a bit weird- but I do tend to do it on Summer walks.
ReplyDeleteAlso do not get the coats worn on shoulders thing- er why is that a thing? Bizarre! I do wear berets on the back of my head as well as on the side- it all depends how I'm feeling or the size of the beret- those with tighter brims work better like that.
Thank you :)
DeleteMaybe the hat thing doesn't work for me because I don't like hats to be tight, which is why I have to wear them low - almost to my eyes - otherwise they fall off!

Just arrived here via Betty.
