A Buyer's Archive | 2020

Here are all the clothing and accessory purchases I made in 2020, a total of just 20 items. I had planned to buy one item per month and whilst I obviously didn't stick to it, it was successful in curbing my spending more than anything else I've tried.

When I saw an item I liked I would ask myself if I liked it enough for it to be my 'one item', most of the time to answer was 'no', and it went back on the rail.

I don't doubt that being in lockdown had an impact on my spending, even when we were out of lockdown I didn't want to venture out too much, I can probably count the number of times I stepped foot in a charity shop since April on one hand. Which is no bad thing (except for the shops obviously).

My only truly nonsense purchase was a pre-loved Monsoon dress. It's not the sort of thing anyone needs during lockdown but it's just so lovely. I'm sure that at some point the perfect occasion to wear it will present itself, even if I have to wait a while.

The most expensive purchase was the leather rucksack and given that this was purchased a week before we were put in to lockdown for the first time, and the need for a bag vanished overnight, it's actually been used a decent amount. It's the only bag I've used when I've been out since I purchased it. With luck (and mass vaccinations) I'll be able to use it so much more in 2021.

I hope you're well, stay safe, stay inside, and keep smiling!
xx

  1. I think your leather rucksack was a superb investment, it will get years of use, the older it gets the better it's going to loook and just think of all those days out it will accompany you on when things are back to normal, great also as a flight bag if you get the chance to take a holiday - yes I do believe those things are in reach with this vaccine on the way - we just have to remain optimistic. Although the chazzas are all closed, EBay is still a good alternative :)

    1. It's already starting to show the smallest signs of wear and I like it all the more for it. I love how leather ages.
The thought of a holiday it a lovely one, we have a trip to France to reorganise which I am very much looking forward to. Won't it be lovely to be able to visit foreign shores again?

  2. I think lockdown will have definitely curbed many people's spending, though I suppose if you're intent on spending money there's always internet shopping these days. You've done so well to purchase so little and there's some things there which I wouldn't have been able to resist either. I love the stripy top, anything with stripes for me.

    1. I am looking forward to the charity shops opening again when it's safe to do so, and not just because I have bags of donations ready to drop off! Stripes are always hard to resist, we have that in common, they've been a staple for me for years.

  3. You did do well despite the limited retail opportunities! I love the bag, like Betty days it'll only get better with age.
It's the first time in over twenty years that we haven't travelled to India in either December or January, this winter is going to feel like an eternity. When we're allowed to travel again I shall be the first of the plane and kissing the tarmac in abject joy! xxx

    1. It must feel very strange to be grounded this winter. It'll feel all the sweeter when you do return! I'm looking forward to having the freedom to roam again, I love being at home, and I spend a lot of time at home, but I miss being able to just go out when the mood strikes.

  4. Even taking lockdown into account, you were very restrained buying only 20 items. My spending was definitely curbed by lockdown, but I haven't been able to resist the charity shops when they re-opened. The rucksack is an investment, and that lovely Monsoon dress will still be there once all of this is over! Take care and stay safe, Hazel xxx

    1. I did visit a few charity shops when they opened, and it was so nice to be able to go back to them, it felt a little like returning home :)
I'm looking forward to wearing my Monsoon dress, I think I'll probably have to invent an opportunity to wear it.

  5. AT some point an occasion will present itself and you'll be congratulating yourself for having already bought such a lovely dress for it - no panic shopping and overspending xx

  6. That dress will definitely have its day, even if it is posh afternoon tea with me and Sophie (I will go out for an afternoon tea with you both even though you know I'm not totally sold on them- after lockdown and things improve- it will be a treat!)
I think you did amazingly! I did buy less last year than I have previous years but I did still end up having quite a few parcels arriving at times! I wish I had kept track!
I think that bag is gorgeous and all your items look lovely. My favourite is the stripy skirt!x

    1. We could just go to a fancy hotel, eat chocolate cake, and wear pretty dresses? But yes, I can't wait to meet up with you both when we can.
I love the bag, it'll be around for YEARS. The skirt is a favourite of mine too, possibly knocking my green skirt off the top spot...
