Photo An Hour | November 2020

Wednesday, November 25, 2020

It wasn't until 10am that I realised November 21st was Photo An Hour. Already that morning I'd fed the cats, had breakfast (in that order), emptied the dishwasher, got showered and dressed, finished a book I was reading, and had a grocery delivery.

10am. The postman had just been and delivered some crafty bits I'd ordered to make some tree decorations. All I wanted to do was make them but I had work to do... but Sophie pointed out that work could wait and realising that she was absolutely right, I turned on the heater in my office, made myself a cuppa, and gathered together my crafting supplies.

11am. Work was being stubbornly ignored. As was the housework (who needs dust free surfaces anyway?). I had tea, my favourite iTunes playlist playing (my Latitude list which consists of mostly Ward Thomas, Years & Years, George Ezra, Oh Wonder, Freya Ridings, and Chvrches) and I was ready to get crafting.

12pm. Three beaded stars made. They’re crackle glaze beads which look marvelously twinkly with fairy lights. I just needed to decide on what ribbon to use, but first, I needed more tea.

I saw an Instagram post last year that showed how to make them step-by-step and made a number of them to sell at a Cake and Craft sale, they all sold so I had none left for my own tree.

1pm. Lunch had been consumed, Andy had popped home and we had soup with a cheese sandwich. I’d made good progress on the decorations but was a little hindered by Tinker demanding some attention.

2pm. Stars, bells, beads, and pom poms under construction.

3pm. I interrupted my day of crafting for some time outside. I'd realised that if I didn’t do it soon I’d run out of daylight. Andy came home from work and set about mowing the lawn. After a bit of a wander, I set about tidying the greenhouse a little.

4pm. Socks accompanied me on another little walk around the garden. I love this, although he rarely stays in his lane so I have to be careful not to trip over him.

5pm. Wanting to continue with my crafting, I found a free knitting pattern on Pinterest for a small toadstool. It looked easy enough and I had more than enough wool in my stash to give it a go. I used up a tiny ball of leftover cream wool, which I always enjoy, it feels really good to use up woollen leftovers.

6pm. I had the required parts knitted, and just needed to add some french knots and sew it together. I had to Google 'how to do french knots' as it'd been a while, but it all came flooding back.

7pm. Andy cooked supper - smoked salmon fillets, cous cous and tenderstem broccoli - and this is what the rest of my evening looked like. Watching Strictly Come Dancing, and whatever came on after that (it was only a few days ago but I can't remember what we watched!).

9pm. Bed. Book. Boy cat.

I'm glad I ignored the boring adult stuff and spent the day doing lovely things instead. It was much needed.

  1. Yay! This looks like a really fun day! I really enjoy a bit of crafting and we have spent time making Christmas decorations for the past couple of years, there's something brilliant about it.
Soup and a sandwich is the best lunch, especially if ravenous and you dippy dip the sandwich.
I've given Strictly a miss again this year, I feel like it winds me up far too much plus I neither know who the celebs are or take a liking to them. I've got in to Elly Griffiths too, love a good book. xx

    1. It was a really fun day, partly thanks to you helping me to finally decide to ignore work for the day. Most of these decorations are for friends, but I do want to make a few more for our tree, not that we need any more!
I most certainly did dippy dip, that's the whole point of soup isn't it?
I generally only know a few of the celebs each year, and there are usually a few I think have had too much previous training and shouldn't really be allowed in it, but it's become something of a tradition, and it is nice when someone you don't like goes home :)
I really enjoy Elly Griffiths, I'm reading them in order and luckily have managed to find most of them in charity shops.
Hope you had a lovely weekend!

  2. I definitely prefer crafting to housework. I'm loving Strictly this year, it's hard to pick who will be in the final as all of them have the ability to get there.

    1. Me too, in fact I prefer almost anything to housework.
I'd love to see Bill Bailey to win, I think he's wonderful, but I doubt that'll happen.

  3. I'm glad to hear you had a fun day! Sometimes you just have to go with the flow, and accept that it cannot be all about work or housework! Your day of crafting was definitely well spent, and I'm loving the beaded stars as well as the knitted toadstool, which is very cute. I love how Socks accompanied you on your little walk.
That photo of those teasel seed heads is stunning. xxx

    1. I had a lovely day, and it was just what I needed!
I've since knitted a few more toadstools, this was the largest one on the pattern, there are smaller ones that I might try, I think they'll be even cuter.

  4. what a nice day! I just love your beaded stars and will be taking a look at the tutorial linky when I have a moment to myself ... you are right about dust - my mother never dusted, after a while it doesn't get any worse - however my ocd spurs me into spring cleaning frenzies so it doesn't settle long here lol! I wish I could be like you a bit more and just sit down and enjoy being creative without worrying about that pile of chores mounting up! Knitting is not something I can ever be good at but I do admire people who have the patience - probably knitting would be a substitute to nail biting so maybe I should try :)

    1. Do share your stars if you give them a try, they're really easy to make.
My Mum can't ignore dust but I just needed a day doing as I pleased. The dusting has since been done.
You should give knitting a try if it's something you fancy, it's easy to find beginner patterns, and if you need a book I can recommend The Chicks with Sticks Guide to Knitting by Mary Ellen O'Connell and Nancy Queen. It has a series of simple patterns to teach you the basics.

  6. Socks sounds like a little dog! I love cats that do that.
I do adore your beautiful, neat decorations- they look marvellous!
Funny enough you are talking about crafting as I have just spent the evening since school ended, making decorations for my doors to the music room at school as we are having a door decorating competition. I've been using all recycled materials if I can so far- not sure what it's going to look like in the end- bit of a mish mash!

    1. It's really cute when they walk with me, Tinker tends to get distracted and wanders off :)
I hope the door decorations went well, good luck in the competition! (I'm hoping / assuming you'll share your entry on your blog)
