A Buyer's Archive 2020 #3

Wednesday, September 30, 2020

At the end of June I put myself on a three month spending ban. In July I didn't purchase anything, but in August I went into town for the first time in months, and the lure of the charity shops was too strong to resist. I was a bit like a kid in a sweet shop and came home with three clothing items (and four books), but I could've bought more. I bought two tops and a skirt, all £3.50 each. I've worn them all already.

A bit later on in the month my local charity shop opened it's doors again and I popped in to drop off a bag of donations. Whilst there I had to have a look around, right? I bought another three items (navy vest top £2.90, shorts £2.00, black vest top £1.99), all in the sale.

Then I purchased a pre-loved Seasalt dress for £9.50.

In September I found three really lovely summer tops on ebay, totaling £17.99 (one of the tops was brand new with tags, so I paid a little more than usual, the other two were the same top in different colours).

I've completely failed my challenge to buy only one item per month this year, but I really like all my purchases so I'm not sorry, I've purchased a lot less than last year. I've purchased 19 items so far this year, which is how many items I purchased in August alone last year...

These are all of last year's August purchases. I no longer own the pink Geek t-shirt, the seams twisted after a few washes, or the mint green blouse. I liked it but couldn't find a single thing in my wardrobe to pair it with (that I liked), so I donated it back to the charity shop I bought it from. Everything else is still in use.

Total so far for 2020: £198.35

Total at this time last year:  £305.73

Left of £200.00 budget: £1.65

Items purchased: 19 (pre-loved: 15) (new: 4)

For the fifth year running I'm keeping track of my spending on clothes, shoes, and accessories with A Buyer's Archive.

  1. You're doing brilliantly! I love the blue linen midi dress on you. Is that your Seasalt one? I had a comment on an old blog post a while ago from the brother who own the company, apparently they grew up in Walsall and loved a post I wrote about my home town. xxx

    1. Yep, that's the Seasalt one. I dithered a bit before buying it, but I'm glad I did.

  2. The dress and the long skirt are lovely.
I bought 4 items of clothing in September - the most I've bought all year! A skirt, a 2-pack of leggings, a dress and a pair of tights. In August I bought a pair of shoes.

  3. You've been doing well and I'm glad you're not feeling guilty about the unexpected and unintentional spending. I also love that the vast majority of your buys were pre-loved. And surely that gorgeous Seasalt dress was worth every penny! xxx

    1. My 'rules' are only a guide of what I think I'd like to achieve at the beginning of the year. I have bought a lot less than in recent years so I'm happy, although the year isn't over yet! haha!

  4. Love the plaid/tartan coat, that's a really versatile piece for the Autumn. I haven't bought anything this season apart from two Anokhi tops from EBay which I haven't blogged yet. Charity shops here are mostly still closed.

    1. Thanks! The £1.65 still stands (for now) I doubt I'll stick within budget but I also doubt I'll spend very much more.
I do love the tartan coat, not that I've worn it yet this autumn, I haven't been anywhere :D

    1. Sadly I didn't get the chance to wear the black top. I'm so glad I purchased the Seasalt dress, it's lovely to wear.
I've already gone over budget having bought a long cardigan yesterday - but I was supporting my local charity shop (any excuse!!).
