Winter Capsule Outfits

Friday, April 19, 2019

Having just 30 items in my winter capsule was more than enough to see me through the season. In fact I had two items that didn't get worn - red shirt, khaki mini skirt. I am a creature of habit though and I tend to reach for my favourite items over and over again. You can probably guess... red floral skirt, mustard jumper, blue skinny jeans, long winter coat (which wasn't actually in the capsule to begin with, but I swapped it with my short grey winter coat - it was a bargain charity shop find and I wanted to wear it!).

Roughly 43% of my capsule was pre-loved this time around, with the new stuff being staple items - jeans, navy / black jumpers, stripe tees - that will be worn time and time again. I did donate three items to charity as I'm trying to whittle down my wardrobe to pieces I adore. Reasons for donating can be filed under 'it doesn't sit quite right', and 'it left fluff on everything'. Despite liking these items these reasons are enough for me to pick something else to wear instead, I figured they're not worth keeping and someone else might get more wear out of them, that's the hope anyway.

What are the reasons that make you part with clothing? What's the weirdest reason you've parted with an item?

  1. I think you did really well, as there seems to be quite a variety your outfits! An 43% pre-loved is admirable. There will always be items left unworn, for some reason or other, so just two isn't bad at all. The long winter coat is a fabulous piece, which I guess will see you through many winters to come. On a different note, after you posted about the white noise machine you bought for Andy, I googled it and happened upon a YouTube video which plays white noise for 10 hours! While I haven't used it for sleeping, it's fabulous to filter out sounds I'm sensitive to, and it helps me concentrate. Both my husband and myself have been using it daily ever since. So I owe you thanks! xxx

    1. I liked the capsule, it gave me plenty of freedom. The 43% is something I hope to improve on, and if my buying habits continue as they have been I think it'll be easy enough. I love the winter coat. I'd been hoping to find one for a while and I couldn't believe my luck when I came across this, with the original tags still on for £6.00! My coats always last a long time, so I can see myself wearing this for many years.
I'm glad you found some white noise, I didn't think to look on YouTube. Andy hasn't used the machine yet, I think he's skeptical, but I'll let you know how he gets on.

  2. That red skirt and rainbow stripe jumper are my favourites. A great score with the coat, too.
With your capsule wardrobe what happens if you really want to wear something not in the collection, like your green skirt for instance. Do you get it out of storage or wear something else? I don't think I could be that strict with myself! xxx

    1. I love that coat!
Generally I stick to what I have in my capsule, I enjoy the challenge of making it work - not that it's much of a challenge. But if there is something that I simply HAVE to wear, I wear it, whether it's in the capsule or not. Nothing bad is going to happen if I break the rules. It doesn't happen very often though as I tend to fill my capsules with my favorite items.

  3. I think you've got a good selection of garments there. I must admit that I'm very lazy with my winter wardrobe and it's jeans all the way for me. I just wanted to thank you for the lovely comment you left on my last post about the death of my mum, it was very much appreciated and helped so much to know that people were thinking of me at this sad time xx

    1. I do wear jeans for the majority of the time, they're just too easy to pull on aren't they?
There's not much that can be said to help you feel better at a time like this, but I'm glad my comment (and those from others) helped in some small way.
