Day Zero Project | Update #2

Wednesday, April 18, 2018

I'm 365 days into my Day Zero Project with 636 days remaining.

Writing the list really made me think about things I'd like to do. I felt energised after I'd written it, and ticking things off a list is something I always find immensely satisfying.

This list helps me put together my seasonal to-do lists, and has pushed me to do things that I would otherwise put into the 'one day' category. For example No. 92 Sleep in an overnight train, and No. 82 Attend the midnight premiere of a movie are the kind of things that I'd say 'we should do that' but never make a plan to actually do it. Now I think about the how, when and where.

No.85 on the list is to Visit seven restaurants in seven days and I've decided that's how I'm going to celebrate my birthday in August. I'll rope in my friends and family to help. I'm looking forward to it already!

I have several goals in progress, but here are the ones I've completed since my first update.

004. Decorate the kitchen
I went from a magnolia sort of colour to one called Natural Hessian, which is an equally pale shade of beige. Most people haven't noticed the change, but I prefer it, it looks fresher and really suits the kitchen.

021. See a psychic
Psychics fascinate me, I swing between believing it and thinking it's total bunkum. I had my first psychic reading when I was 30 and it blew me away, the lady told me so many things that were either true or came true over the next few months.

Anyway, this time I had a one-to-one reading with a chap called Ryan Gooding. It'd been booked for months and I was a little hesitant, but I needn't have been. I won't go into details but I was impressed.

028. Go on a picnic
My sister-in-law organised a picnic for my birthday at Framlingham Castle, we had Buck's Fizz, smoked salmon and birthday cake - complete with candles. And my nephew H made a heart shaped cheese scone especially for me.

029. Grow something edible in the greenhouse
I've grown mixed lettuce leaves, lambs lettuce, 2 varieties of spring onions, garlic chives, cucamelons, and a few raspberries and strawberries. This year I've got spinach, radish, and rainbow carrots sown, and have lettuce leaves, baby leeks and sweet peppers to sow (and soon!). On a side note, the greenhouse is about to receive a bit of a make-over - replacing broken glass and new benches.

041. Find and master a dessert recipe that will become my signature dish
I found a recipe for Malteaser cheesecake on Pinterest and made it for Andy's birthday last year, I got up early so it had time to set and smuggled it over to his parents house later that day. It was delicious!

I made it for a family gathering on Christmas Eve, and then again when visiting my brother and his family a few months later.

048. Bake and decorate a chocolate cake for Andy's birthday
Having discovered that Andy isn't actually that keen on chocolate cake I decided to make him the cheesecake above, which also gave me the opportunity to tick two things off the list.

050. Find seaglass
I picked up my first bit on a beach clean in June last year, and since then I've found a good handful.

054. Take part in a beach clean up
I've actually done this three times now, the first of which you can read about here, and the third time here, as part of a Photo An Hour day. I'll be doing another one in June.

087. Visit a lavender field
I couldn't believe my luck when I found a lavender farm in Suffolk, so I went along and it was charming.

  1. I don't really have a list of things I'd like to do. It's more like, mmm, I'd like to do that one day, and then it usually doesn't happen. I can see that making a list can be a great incentive, and then of course there's the ticking off, which is always pleasurable. I'm envious of your greenhouse, but there's really no space for one in our tiny garden. The Malteser cheesecake looks absolutely delicious! xxx

    1. That's exactly why I have the list. I'd talk about doing so many things but few ever come to anything.
I am very lucky to have the space for a greenhouse, it is a bit ramshackle at the moment but I still love it, and with a bit of TLC it'll be glorious! I love pottering in there and sometimes I just sit with a cuppa and a book. The cats like it too, you can guarantee if I'm in there, they are too :)

  2. I know how much you love ticking things off on your list, it must feel like a terrific sense of achievement to have a few more under your belt. I love your greenhouse and your sea glass is lovely.
Where are you going on your sleeper train? I find them so exciting! My first was the Marrakesh Express, shared with goats and chickens back in the early 90s. I loved it.
    Fab photo of you.xxx

    1. The sleeper train might just be The Caledonian Sleeper from London to Fort William, or The Night Riviera from London to Penzance. Or, if I'm feeling extravagant, The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express from London to Venice. But I've also seen holidays offering rail travel in Marrakesh (I love Marrakesh), India, Norway... oh, the possibilities!

  3. That Malteaser cake looks so good. Have you shared the recipe on the blog Hazel? (I may have missed it!)

  4. Your cheesecake looks delicious! I'd just eat the top!
Ooh, well done on your seaglass, that's a super stash! Love the paler turquoise piece-v smooth! I've travelled in a sleeper to Penzance and it is great fun though do not turn the aircon much or you won't sleep like I didn't!
Your greenhouse is beautiful! I'm v impressed by your growing. I wish my garden was just a bit bigger so I could have one!
I think I must do a list like this-it really is a good idea!
    Love the update!

    1. I'm trying a new cheesecake this weekend - Mint Aero! I hope it's as good as the Malteaser one.
I think the paler turquoise one is my favourite too. I can't believe I've collected so much in one year, when I'd never found any before, but then I suppose that's what happens when you actually look!
I do adore my greenhouse, broken windows, moss and all.
Do write a list of your own, it really pushes me to do things that probably I wouldn't otherwise do.

  5. I especially like the "seeing a psychic" point. It kind of intrigued me to see one too.
I love how making a list can cheer us up. I totally understand how satisfying it is when you tick something off your list!

  6. I've never done a beach clean (I live too far from the coast, haven't even seen the sea for almost 2 years!) but I'd like to do a 2 minute beach clean type thing when I do visit the coast.

It must be very satisfying to cross things off the list! I like the idea of these day zero lists but I know I'm just too indecisive and would struggle to actually write a list that's achievable!

    1. Two years? You must rectify this! I think the two minute beach clean idea is genius, imagine if everyone did that...?

I love crossing things off, and I procrastinated for ages before finally writing mine. I found some good ideas on the Day Zero website, I doubt I'll do them all but it's fun just to think of all the possibilities!
