Resolutions | Looking Back

Friday, January 01, 2016

It seems impossible that we're at the beginning of 2016. Last year went by so quickly, and already everyone is busy looking back and reflecting, and looking forward and making plans.

Looking back at the resolutions I made for 2015, I realise that they weren't anything ground breaking, I don't feel like I was challenged by them particularly, they were more about making little changes to improve life overall.

Here's how I got on;

Get fit and stay that way
I don't feel much fitter but I started attending exercise classes twice a week towards the end of 2015, which I will continue to do, so I guess I can call this a win.

See more of my friends and family
I was going to say I failed at this but when I think about it I actually did see more of people! I made more of an effort to arrange meeting up and suggested outings and things to do. I just need to up my efforts in the coming year. I find it so easy to be at home, doing my own thing that it's easy to forget there is life outside mine.

Once a month home improvement
I didn't achieve a lot here. This year was more about the wedding to begin with, then came the honeymoon and the year was half over. I did a number of smaller jobs but nothing of note. I'm hugely frustrated that I spent a lot of time thinking 'I really should be doing X or Y on the house' and then failed to find the time to do any of it. 2016 is going to be a year of home improvement.

Learn a new skill
Needle felting. Loved this and plan to do lots more in the coming year.

Try something I've never done before
Scuba diving. Loved this too, I'm not sure it's something I'd take up as a full time hobby (when would I find the time?), but I'm very glad I gave it a go.

Cook from scratch
I did, but not as much as I'd have liked. My Mum gave me a cookery book that I made several meals from, and I began to seek out others.

Not become a wedding bore
I think I failed in real life and on this here blog. I tried to keep it to my Wedding Wednesday posts but it did spill over into others. It's a good job we had a short engagement and it was all over relatively quickly. (And despite knowing this I couldn't resisted to use a wedding pic in this post!).

Although I didn't excel in any of my resolutions 2015 has been an amazing year. I got married, work has been great, I visited some amazing places, attended my first music festival, I enjoyed blogging more than ever, bagged some fab charity shops finds, and made some new friends.

Despite being disappointed with how I performed on my resolutions I can say 2015 was the best year yet, one full of many wonderful memories I'll cherish.

There's so much more to life than resolutions and life doesn't always go to plan - sometimes for the better, sometimes not. The trick is to embrace it and enjoy the journey. So, no matter what 2016 has in store for me I'm looking forward to it!

Happy '16!

  1. I find my resolutions are almost never achieved, either wholly or in part, but the process of reflection on what I'd like to achieve or change is the useful bit, as much as actually doing them. Does that make sense?

  2. You didn't become a wedding bore at all and actually, for me anyway, struck the balance just right!
