Monthly Resolutions for 2020

Tuesday, January 07, 2020

I've been here before, at the start of another year, studiously making lots of resolutions, only to forget about them by the middle of February.

This year I want to make my resolutions at the start of each month, it can be anything, e.g. always have fresh flowers in the house, or focus on working my way through my never ending TBR pile, or get as many little DIY jobs ticked off the list as humanly possible.

The important thing is to decide at the beginning of each month what my focus will be, because having a limited attention span means I forget all about my good intentions after a few weeks, and things fall by the wayside, and another year passes and I still haven't painted those bloody radiator pipes in the hallway.

An added bonus is that I can make them seasonal, and relevant to what else is happening in my life at the time. There's no point deciding now that I'll go all out in the garden and start a huge landscaping project in June when I could find myself inundated with freelance work. It's more flexible, and will keep bringing my attention back to the changes I want to make.

By the end of 2020 I want to look back and see progress, I want to be able to point to things and say 'I changed / improved / implemented that in 2020'.

The first installment of my Monthly Resolutions is all about getting organised and doing things I've had on my to-do list for ages.

Eat the pantry.
Instead of ignoring the tins of food that have been in there for months, and constantly adding to the freezer stocks, I want to use up what we have. I know we have some items that I don't usually cook with, so I might discover some new recipes in the process.

Get stuff on the walls.
I've been planning a gallery wall in the dining room for ages, I have a small collection of photos to get me started, and what nicer way to start the year than with some new smiley photos to brighten up the place once the Christmas decorations come down?

Declutter
Starting with the cupboard under the stairs (good timing as this is where the Christmas decorations are stored), I'll then turn my attention too the pantry (see no.1), and then the kitchen.

If all this gets done, I'll turn my attention to my wardrobe.

What are your plans for 2020?

  1. I've been doing this for the last year and I really think it helped. I'm doing it again this year and blogging about it too (another thing that helped) :)

    1. I think it'll be really helpful. I'm already making plans for February :)
Blogging about my plans does spur me on to get things done.

  2. I think breaking things down to a month at a time is really good. I have made a year long Gonna list- as in Gonna do. I am now trying to see what can be accomplished in January, plus of course the things that have to be done- house insurance and passport renewal!

  3. Loving that photo - cat paws are the best!
That seems a very sensible idea to break your plans into bite-sized manageable pieces. I usually just start the day announcing what I want to get done before bedtime and once I've said it it has to be done or I feel like a complete failure! xxx

    1. They are the best! (and so cute)
If my list is too long I procrastinate about what to do first, and end up doing nothing, I hope this will be the antidote...

  4. Love the cat paw photo, I'm always trying to take photos of Phoebe's paws, but she doesn't let me ;-) Making monthly resolutions instead of yearly sounds like a good idea, and much more manageable. Good luck! xxx

      I'm hoping it works too.

  5. A monthly list is a good idea. I have tried using up tinned stuff in the last few months and only re-buying one of what's needed to stop finding so many tins of the same thing!

    1. This sounds familiar, I found three tins of pineapple chunks and neither of us particularly like pineapple!

  7. I like tins of pineapple for school- they get me eating fruit! (sorry responding to your reply above!)
I think this is a good idea- I always forget things too!

    1. I like tinned fruit, especially peaches, I just don't know what made me buy pineapple. They're gone now anyway, I ate them for breakfast three days in a row.
I'm getting on well with these things so far, I hope it works better than making a long list for the year.
I keep putting off the pantry because it's chilly in there - should've thought of that!
