130+ Wears | Skinny Jeans

Tuesday, February 25, 2020

Back in April 2019 I'd worn my skinny jeans 71 times - well over my #30Wears goal! You won't be surprised to discover that I continued to keep a tally of the number of wears these jeans rack up.

They still have plenty of wear in them and currently stand at 145 wears. At £66.15 that's about 45p per wear, but you know I'm going to continue to wear them, as I do all my jeans, until they fall to pieces.

They are starting to show signs of thinning in places - knees, belt loops - but when they do 'go' I'll be repairing them with visible mending.

The 30 wears concept was the brainchild of Olivia Firth, founder of Ecoage: the next time you want to buy new clothing or accessories, ask yourself if you will wear the item at least 30 times? If not, don’t buy it!

I was fascinated by this concept and this is why I've been keeping a tally of both new and preloved clothing purchases since Autumn 2017. My biggest question was - how do I know how many times something has been worn? Which is why I started counting...

  1. Wow, that pair of jeans must be quite a workhorse to have been worn 130 times and counting! In all honesty, I don't think there's one item of clothing in my wardrobe which has been worn that much, I'd be glad to reach even half of that. The items I'm wearing the most must be my coats and jackets. Perhaps my trusted denim jacket might be in the running for 100+ wears? xxx

    1. Doing this has certainly opened my eyes to how long it takes to wear something just 30 times. Jeans are the most worn for me because at this time of year I wear them daily. Some items that I've had for a few years are still only at two or three wears... but then I do have far more clothes than I actually need!

  2. I can't help thinking that despite 145 wears, 45p a wear sounds like a high figure for just one item. I suspect I would be alarmed at how much an entire outfit of an average person on the street would cost. Just goes to show that a well considered choice will not only last the test of time but will be a piece reached for again and again. Love your collection of stylish looks created round these jeans xx

    1. It does sound like a lot, and to think these jeans were in the sale - they were originally £115.00! I think it evens out in my wardrobe, a pair of jeans I purchased for £5 are at 43 wears already, which is *finds calculator* just 11p per wear already. But yes, those who don't shop second hand and only wear their clothes for a fraction of the time, the cost per wear would be high. Keeping a tally has made me aware of how little somethings get worn, and there are certainly items that I hang onto because I 'haven't worn them enough yet', it's opened my eyes.

  3. That's impressive! Well done!! I reckon that several of my trousers at at a similar level - my work trousers, I mean! I have had some of them a very long time! But some items get worn once or twice and not worn again (quite often because I don't like the way they feel, or they cling to the armpits, or the material irritates my skin which I don't discover until I've worn them for a day.)

    1. Thank you. I'm so interested to see how many times I wear them in total, until that sad day that I have to admit I simply can not wear them any more!
I have clothes that don't get worn a lot too, for similar reasons. One thing I do need to do is try things on in charity shops, the number of times I've got something home and it didn't look nice, or didn't fit well, I can't even begin to guess. But those are the things to donate back, or sell on ebay. I'm hoping that this will happen less as I'm buying less this year.

  4. That's good going! I bet, even when those jeans finally do give up the ghost they'll live on as shorts and denim patches!
Love the collage. What fab colours. xxx

    1. Indeed they will. Once upon a time every item of clothing I owned was either denim or black! I wonder what the me of then would think now!?

  5. I wear my jeans to death, they really do earn what I pay for them. It would be interesting to know how many times I wear each pair but I don't think I'd be able to stick to counting them each time I wore them, you're very disciplined at keeping such records.

    1. It's easy to keep track for me. Since 2017 every time I added something to my wardrobe I added it to my list. Everyday when I sit at my desk to start work I put a tally next to each item I'm wearing. It only takes a minute and has become a habit.
I was just going to see which clothing items got to 30 wears, but now I want to see how many times I can wear something until it becomes unwearable. This could go on for years...
